iPod corrupt? Unknown error (1439)

Erm i'm not sure if this helps but my ipod couldn't sync before and if it did it would only sync 30 out of 800 songs which wouldn't play at all. it would usually get -49 or -69 errors or something and it was corrupt, but maybe i found a solution and now my ipod works

Run “c:\WINDOWS\system32\devmgmt.msc” (this is the Device Manager), this will need to be used later, but you’ll need it quickly when you do.
2. Start iTunes
3. Connect iPod
4. Go to your iPod Settings and select “Enable disk use”
5. A dialog box will pop up reminding you that you’ll need to manually eject. Hit OK
6. Hit Apply to save changes to the iPod
7. Quickly switch to Device Manager window and right-click on any item there and select “Scan for hardware changes”
8. Switch back to iTunes, where you should have a nice, working iPod!

I hope this simple procedure will work for everyone, my case....I formatted my ipod classic with itunes 8, it asked me to update it to 1.1.2 I accepted then I got the error unknown error 1493..(Ipod corrupted), I tried to format it with Windows it did not recognize the drive no Fat32 or NSTF in the format window, Ipod showed 0 bytes free, I tried with the games and the Ipod rebooted itself each time, I read in a forum that this update messes up the USB ports drives so I decided to connect it in another port and bingo it is working, I tried different things with Ipodwizard no results so please try to connect the ipod in a different port.

This seemed to work for me:

1. Download latest version of iTunes
2. disconnect from internet (I did this by removing my wireless adapter).
3. Put iPod into disk mode (hold select and play until display says "disk mode" at the top).
4. Connect iPod to computer
5. You should be prompted to restore, click yes.
6. Message will appear saying can't connect to internet, do you want to restore to latest version "2.0.1" instead? (Something along those lines).
7. It should start restoring and work this time.

Does anyone at Apple know about this problem and is Apple doing anything to rectify the issue or they just hoping people send in their Ipods and get charged 70 bucks for them to fix it? If anyone at Apple reviews this please contact me!

Hello everyone, happy new year!

This is just a post to lend support to Charliec78's advice. Changing the USB port is working for me as we speak, touch wood.

Background:

iPod Classic 80Gb would not synchronise - error message was:
"The iPod "<NAME>" could not be synchronised. The required file could not be found."

I tried restoring it in iTunes; then the error message was:
"The iPod "<NAME>" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1437)."

I tried using an earlier version of iTunes, then the latest one; all to no avail. THEN I tred the solution that I should have tried first, which is to change the USB port. This is working magically well, touch wood, and I am rueing the hours wasted on the complex solutions when I could have used the simplest solution first.

Here's a question: why is the solution changing the USB port? Why aren't all the USB ports rendered useless by the 1.1.2 upgrade? And why the number in the error message? Surely if thre's a number then this "unknown error" is known by someone? Not knowing the guts of the problem is deeply unsatifying. If anyone has a plausible solution suitable for the layperson, by all means email me. I'd really like to find out more about this problem.

Anyway - I am happy to have my external brain filled again. ;D

I have the same exact problem. And the 1800APLCARE doesn't help at all.

Well I have followed all the instructions listed above and spent over a week trying to fix this vile 5th gen 80g ipod which has the following wondrous symptoms:

In general:

Whenever is connected to any of my 8 usb ports it asks to restore and itunes claims it is corrupted and should be disconnected and reconnected or restored.
(already tried the disconnect/reconnect thing, success was non-existant)

When dismounted, ipod restarts as though recently restored, however see above point for when reconnected to computer.

Using iTunes 8:

Same ol' restore song and dance except that part way through I get the illustrious message of infinite happiness "The iPod "iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occured (1439)"

This happens when I attempt disk mode as well. I am unable to enable or disable disk use since itunes only shows the summary with the greyed out option of check for updates and everyone's super favorite, amazing, restore button.

Using iTunes 7.6:

Well no error code and it restores sort of, however it gets stuck in a loop and restores over and over and over and you get the point. I have tried all above instructions dealing with this and my result is the same.

Other steps I have taken:

I have also attempted to chkdsk, which failed however I did manage to format the iPod with the NTFS file system, but still no restore going through.

I have updated my USB drivers, and currently I am looking at seeing if I can have it work outside of iTunes since iTunes is as helpful as boobs on a snake right about now.

After struggling for who knows how long with my Apple 5g Video ipod brick I ended up doing something that worked out well for me. I formatted the ipod on my sisters Vista laptop. Worked. But when I tried my XP desktop was getting USB problems. So I tinkered some more. Well I ended up trying RockBox and started having same problems again. So did some more searching. Decided to downgrade my firmware.

Worked well enough. Just download the files. When Itunes says to recover just hold shift down while clicking recover link. Then show Itunes where the files are and will install. After it is done Itunes will insist on updating. Go ahead.

To solve this problem, this is what I did:
Open itunes, select Edit/preferences
Connect ipod - won't show in itunes because it is busy from above step.
Open windows explorer, select my ipod (mine is R)
Click on the + to expland the files
Right click on every folder to uncheck the read only and/or hidden attribute
Click on C:
Open the command prompt
run the following command chkdsk/f r:
When the question comes to covert lost chains to files Y
type Exit when finished
Click on my ipod (R:)
open the ipod_control file
delete everything in music, artwork, itunes
go back to itunes and close the preferences
when the ipod shows, it will ask to rename it - I didn't
when the summary page shows for the device, click restore.

I have not put any album art on the ipod as I found it kept corrupting the ipod, not sure where that is coming from, and I don't care if the artwork is on the ipod.

Not sure exactly which one worked as I worked through all of the steps before trying to restore the ipod.

I have a 5th generation 30g, it has had to be restored once before and went on working fine, now I cant do anything and I have the sad little face on my ipod saying you need itunes support. I cant do anything with it...I am trying the lastest Itunes 8 dpwnload to see if that will help...anyone had any luck I dont want to have to pay 145.00 for service or 249.00 for a new one. I have the touch 8gb just not big enough (i guess the 120gb new would be my solution with a warranty contract if this persists)

Same problem here, tried all the listed fixes, but to no avail, I guess Apple should add the word "disposable" to the box the Ipod comes in. Apple sure doesn't seem to care about the upgrades to Itunes that destroys Ipods. How about it Apple any responses to the problem?
