Problem with iPhone headset microphone

Me too, exactly the same thing. Sound from headphones, but no mic or remote. I just found this page and then used a paper clip to clean the socket, and pulled out a small circular bit of compressed tissue paper. Now everything works fine!

I had the same problem. But cleaning it with a paperclip did the trick.
Maybe a suggestion for the next version, a small cover for the jack when not in use?

Awesome! I was having the same trouble, and almost took my phone in for a 2nd ⚠ replacement. First time around I didn't even think to clean out the jack.

Just used a paperclip and a little 'Dentek' tooth cleaner (a little fuzzy pipe cleaner thing good if you have braces on your teeth) and pulled out a TON of fuzz and lint. Works great now!

Oh, and I'd advise you turn off your phone completely before cleaning it. The metal from the paperclip made the phone think I had plugged in headphones... best not to short it out!

I took my IP in for a Genius visit when I was having some "headset" problems. Their solution, a quick shot from a compressed air can. It wasn't a DIRECT shot because they didn't want to get any liquid air in the hole.

been having the same problem; here's how i solved it!
i took an unravelled paper clip, and cleaned all the lint and gunk out of the headphone socket.
i could not believe how much stuff came out!!!
hey presto; mic function works fine now.
also noticed mic jack sitting deeper (more flush) in the socket.
- probably worth switching off the iphone 1st, and persevere till nothing more comes out...

Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I cant believe how much crud was in my phone. I tried cleaning it and thought it was enough but after seeing these posts I decided to try again a little more vigorously and presto!

Solved:

It was pocket lint.

I took a long safety pin, and slowly & gently pulled out all the lint. You can use a paper clip, like other folks on this thread. Someone above recommended turning off the phone. That's a good idea.

Works just fine now.

My headphone microphone hadn't been working for several months now, and with one-year anniversary of its purchase nearing, I was about to take it in to a Genius Bar to see if it could be fixed. Before doing so, I decided to do an internet search, came across this thread, got out a paperclip, went digging around, and voila! It works! Trip to the Apple Store avoided! Thanks much.

Yes a little lint ball was in my port too -- I tried compressed air first, but that didn't produce anything. I used a paperclip end and I was a little shocked to see the lint ball come out. Another headset I had kept coming out of the port recently - that should have been a clue something was in there.

Anyway, I too went through two headset replacements (via the Genius Bar) before I found this thread.

Have have exact same problem. Mine worked fine until I applied latest OS 3 upgrade released last week. After I upgraded the mic stopped working - tried 2 more diff. headset types and still doens;t work....what does it take to fix this?

I had the same problem with the mic on my 8GB 3G, so poked around in the headphone socket with a paperclip and pulled out a massive piece of lint! Mic now works like a charm.

My problem with the mic/button on the headset started when i upgraded to 3.o, at first my old headphones from my first iphone worked, but now neither works on 3.1.2 upgrade, I have cleaned out the port with paperclip, alcohol, compressed air, with no lint to be found inside, the mic worked fine before these updates any other ideas?

iphone 3g 16gb, 3.1.2
