I had the same case for my original iPhone. It did a good job for most drops, but one time I had my phone on the kitchen counter and went to grab something and knocked it off. It fell face down on the tile floor and cracked the screen.
For my 3G I just have a leather pouch type case for now until I can find one I like. I'm waiting for the Incase Slider to come out for the 3G. I've heard good stuff about it. It's supposed to come out in August sometime. It looks pretty cool. Not sure if there is any screen protection. It says is has some, but I think that is only for scratches, not drops.

I know they are other cases that are bulkier that offer more protection, some are even waterproof, but then you have to use earphones or blue tooth to talk on it. Also I'd imagine any case that provides a front shield will change the appearance and use of the screen.
