Imac will not accept DVD's or CD's

When I insert a DVD or CD, after about 10 secs it spits it right back out. If I continue to insert the DVD or CD right after it ejects, the computer will finally accept it on about the 6th time and everything works fine. Is this a drive issue or software? any ideas?

Thanks

Imac, Mac OS X (10.5.3)

i sincerely hope that it's a big enough problem, because my iMac is a year out of warranty. They actually barely kept me under it last year when my LCD display had a green line running down the side. So Among the drive ejecting almost every disk instantly, my faulty display, and now my graphics card, it's just becoming a never ending problem. I really hope that they just realize that this is a problem that is becoming more widespread and they decide to fix it for me, if not, I have no idea what the **** I'm gonna do.

Have a brand spankin' new 24" Imac running fine for 2 months, using OS X 10.5.5 and out of the blue this morning, it has the same symptoms as yours. Drive will not read or write anything: just spits'em right back out. Considering how many of us are experiencing this problem, could someone at Apple please get on this thread and give us an answer?

This is the 5th thread to which I have replied on this issue. Perhaps the Discussions administrator could make an exception and alert Apple Computer personel of the problem and try and suggest a fix?

Wouldn't that be a miracle. Maybe with their stock taking a nose dive today we will see a bit of humility. I have always been a big Apple supporter and find their deafness on this issue very frustrating.

I need to purchase at least 5 more computers for our office. I was planning on 20" or 24" iMacs but I will stick with the Mini's if this issue is not resolved, let alone acknowledged.

Frustrated,

Add another to the list of recent imac's having CD /DVD acceptance problems. Some CD's work fine and some just get spit out after a short time of trying. Not age of CD related. Seems pretty random, but consistent with the CD (if a particular CD won't load, it will never load). Topic has already been covered with enough detail. I just want to add to the pile.

Add me to this list also, I have a 7 month old iMac 24" with a defective MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-85J (drive spits out disk after 7- 10 seconds) and sure its under warranty but its more the hassle of being without the computer for a number of days and trying to get the 24" behemoth to Apple.

In addition my optical drive also failed on my MacBook Pro Core Duo 1.83 but of course that was easy to take in to the Apple store and have the drive replaced but it leads me to a bigger question of some kind of massive failure of these types of drives. I'd almost rather have the old style slide out drawer drive, those type of drives didn't seem to have the failure rate that this type of drive has.

The other point I'll make is that I don't even use the optical drive as much as in the old days but when you need it "you need it"!!

Also looking down the list of subjects in this category, it's riddled with nothing but problems with optical drives! Apple take notice??

I bought an iMac MB324LL/A last saturday. I'm from Brazil.

But I detected my Macbook MB403LL/A, bought on March 2008, has this problem.

Its optical drive, MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857E, only reads every CD's, but doesn't read any DVD.

It is annoying and disturbing!

I wait a solution!

I will lead it to a service, because it is on warranty, but still is annoying!

Also frustrated,

Tiago

Hi All,

I am having the same problem since last week. It is just out of the blue my superdrive don't read or write anymore. It kept on ejecting movie dvd, audio cd and empty cd.

I even updated my iMac with "Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update" but still no luck.

How come all of us are having the same problem at the same time? Is that the life span of the superdrive?

Hi Guys

I just had my SuperDrive replaced yesterday under AppleCare at the *Oak Brook-ILL* store. It was actually supposed to take *3 to 5 business days*, but I gently asked the genius guy and Apple called the me *the next day* after I brought my iMac in.

*If your iMac is out of warranty it may be a huge problem*, as it was free in my case but they stapled the bill to the service sheet... probably expecting us to see the importance of having AppleCare.

*The bill was US$ 446.00* ... that's how much you may have to pay without warranty.

I don't know about any other authorized service place where you'd be able to get it done safely.

Good luck!

OK, so I dragged my 24" iMac all the way to the Apple store, which was over an hour drive away. Now, if that wasn't bad enough, I had to walk the entire length of the mall in order to get to the Apple Store. I had brought my "baby" in because of hard drive issues, and DVD/CD-r drive issues. (It wouldn't play ANYTHING, would inform me that any DVD I put into the drive, was EMPTY.)
SIX days later, I get my iMac back. (same long walk, same stares as I shleped it back out. I even ended up with bruises on the inside of my forearms from carrying the **** thing.)
Now, to add insult to injury, it still is NOT reading any disc I put in there.
NOW WHAT?
Apple, I loved you, but you're breaking my heart!
(BTW, I did get the Apple Care program, thank the gods!)
Anyone with any fixes yet?

I've been plagued with this problem for months now, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but it seems to be getting worse. Usually my drive will recognise a CD, but DVDs are a 'no-go'. This caused me endless fun at the weekend, when it took me 2 hours of repeated trying to get my mac to start up from the installer DVD (so that I could run Disk Utilities to fix a disk error).

I'm very disappointed.

Imac will not accept DVD's or CD's
