Imac will not accept DVD's or CD's

When I insert a DVD or CD, after about 10 secs it spits it right back out. If I continue to insert the DVD or CD right after it ejects, the computer will finally accept it on about the 6th time and everything works fine. Is this a drive issue or software? any ideas?

Thanks

Imac, Mac OS X (10.5.3)

Well it cheers me up just a little to know I am not alone .

Brand new iMac, out of the box 24 hrs.... finally get around to installing a new app from a cd, and it won't read it. Or Dvds. At all. They sit in there for 2 minutes , then they get spat out.

The shop said " Bring it in, we'll have a look " ( in that oh-my-we-have-one-here-who-can't-even-insert-a-cd-properly-in-her-new-computer tone of voice )
I said " I have 4 other computers in the house, I think I know when it's a hardware problem and not 'operator error', order me a new one today ! "

Now I think after reading these other posts a new-new one may not solve the problem 8 (

I have an intel 24" iMac bought it April 08 with the AppleCare Protection Plan. Optical drive just broke. Will not not accept (grab and pull in) disc. You can push it in till it dissappears but it will not load. You have to pull out with tweeers. Went to Apple web site support and scheduled call back. They had me do some troubleshooting but still did not work. They wanted me to take into nearest Apple store (on hour away in heave traffic) but I requested in home service. They agreed to that and I got a call back within 1/2 hour from Qauleserv. They said replacement drive will be delivered to them by Tuesday (it's now Friday Nov 7th) and they will call me by noon that day to schedule repair time.
Pleasant experience so far. If I was in a real hurry I would take into the Apple store but I don't know if they would have the replacement drive in stock or they would have to wait for it to be delivered also. This way I still have my computer at home till it get fixed.

Dear iLuvmyiMac,

It is great that your computer got fixed, but aren't you at all disappointed that this seems to be an endemic problem in the iMac that Apple is not resolving? Fixing a defective part that is under warranty is not an exceptional activity but rather is to be expected, no??? For many, doing what you did is not an easy task as they cannot do without their computers or for them getting to Apple is an inconvenience.

There is a certain level of expectation that comes with purchasing Apple products. That is why we pay the expense we do to own them. So, the silence from Apple on this problem is deafening. They have machine serial numbers which I am sure they can cross reference the known batch of defective drives to. So why not contact those customers, which there appear to be many of, and do something to address the problem in a proactive, instead of reactive manner.

I hope that once I have time to get my iMac to Apple they will fix it. But why did the problem occur in the first place and why has Apple not contacted me with a recall. What will they do to address my time and inconvenience?

Yes, I completely agree. And I am one of those people who has a VERY hard time to get to the APPLE store. I too live on Long Island as do you, and I know of only one store which is fairly far and I have a NON working car. I also agree that it is a VERY big dissapointment that this seems to be an epidemic with these expensive machines. I did a lot of research before I decided to buy an iMac, and I only wish I was aware of this situation before I purchased one. I do think that Apple has to "do something" about this....in reality I was just commending the "genius" @ the store for working on this so quickly, but I am VERY disappointed in Apple as a company. I only hope that this and all of the other complaints do reach someone @ the top, as this is the only way anything will get done about it.

I have an early 2006 when they first made the flat panel Intel Imac & last week I updated the "Migration and DVD/CD Sharing Update" that software update recommended and since then my superdrive will take in the cd dvd sounds like its gonna except it and then eject right back out. I know the prior week i had just watched a video on it and was fine.

This is ridiculous apple hasnt attempted to look into this since so many people have same problem all of the sudden. mine is also out of warranty so $446 ill just get a newer computer.

What's the harm on having the GENIUS take a look at your computer???

I don't get it...

I brought mine... I also knew it was a hardware problem... they looked at that and said.... "HARDWARE PROBLEM"

And they replaced it without harm... you will have to bring it to the store anyway to have it replaced...

Then... they'll see it and replace it...

As I said before... I got a brand new 20 inches iMac aluminum 2 weeks before my Apple Care expired replacing an iMac 17 inches second generation which had the screen replaced 3 times.

Apple will replace your machine if it is bad... but I tell you two things...

BE FIRM...

BUT POLITE!

Good luck ........ and buy Apple Care ALWAYS!

Imac will not accept DVD's or CD's
