Imac will not accept DVD's or CD's

Try this:

How to fix the CD player

1. Go to System/Library/Caches and trash the folder com.apple.kernelcaches
2. Go back to System/Library and trash the file Extensions.kextcache
3. Restart.
If that doesn't work, try trashing this file:
~Home/Library/Preferences/CD Info.cidb
That is the way its done

Didn't help me either. But then again my whole system and not just my superdrive is down. Sometimes it does startup for about 15 min. at a time. This is when I try to back-up as much as possible. What a hazzel! Apple won't take any responsibility. It's making it more and more difficult to be a strong defender of Apple products when;

1) my first Mac - a iBook G4 12" went "black screen" due to production fault with loose connections to the graphic card (this is verified) just outside warranty. 2) My iPod 20 GB White had a stall failure just outside warranty. 3) My iMac G5 20" is totally dead due to powersupply failure and 4) My new MacBook had a harddisc failure and is cracking up in the chasis.

Some might say bad luck, I tend to say bad apple! I wonder if the meaning of the word "consumer-product" is "throw out your bad apples before they make the new ones rot!".

How stupid I am to still prefer Macs. (Answer: Because of the OS X)

Didn't work for me either I'm afraid. Just tried inserting the Leopard installation disk and it worked, nothing else though.

At first I thought it might have been a problem caused by booting into bootcamp, anyone had the same idea?

I have the same Problem with an iMac from 2007.
In the first time some buyed DVDs begins to stop near the end of the movie and the drive try to read the DVD again and again. Only going a bit forward will help.
Today i get some trouble with some blank CDs. I would like to burn some Audio CDs (Philips CD-R with LightScribe). In the past i can burn on it without any problems. Today i can inside the CD and a few secconds later the drive will pull them out again and again without a try to loading the CD. I'm happy that i have an external drive who didn't have this problems, but that's not the right deal i think.
So the strange one is, that this problem is incalculable.

I too have just discovered the same sort of problem. I have been downloading audio CD's into itunes. I have found that about 1 in 6 CD's keeps being ejected and then eventually it will mount properly. However I observe the problem is with particular CD's because when this happens if I try loading some other CD's it will work and then occur again when I go back and try the CD that ejects.

I have checked carefully to see if there is any apparent damage or dirt on the CD but I do not think this is the problem.

When I try downloading the problem CD with another drive it works fine.

Questions

1. Is this A hardware problem related to a specific drive.

2. Could this be an environment issue (temperature) I sometimes notice that after I have re- awakened my imac from sleep and then tried the problem CD it will work.

3. Is there a requirement to clean the drive from time to time.

Add another to the list. Last night my wife put in a rental dvd and now the drive won't accept dvds or cds. I have tried resetting PRAM and NVRAM, tried removing the files suggested by N Mills above, restarting with a cd in the drive, reinserting a cd multiple times, nothing works - it just spits them all straight out. I now need to get onto apple and will then need to ship it back to them via courier. Gone are the days when Macs were the cream of the crop.

Yep, I'm another casualty...bought 24" in August...never had any rejected or unreadable discs, but there were occasional, louder-than-normal noises coming from the SuperDrive (grinding, loud whirring).

Yesterday, the drive just stopped working...when disc was inserted, the drive made 6 attempts to read disk (short, soft ehhhhh sound...no spinning drive), then ejected the disc...this occurred with cds, data discs, and DVDs. No error messages. Running disk utility on OPTIARC DVD RW AD-5630A didn't help either...no FIRST AID option given.

I called Apple, they set up a Genius Bar appointment. I don't have Apple Care, but the computer is only a little over 4 months old...does anyone know if I'll get charged for the repair? Should I make any special requests regarding the replacement of the drive??

Looks like the same thing is happening to me. Only 5 days of warranty left and the thing has started spitting out music cds only, everything else appears to work.

Some DVDs work just fine in my imac (running Leopard 10.5.5, the drive is the Matshita UJ-875 firmware= DB09).

But other (perfectly legitimate, undamaged) disks either fail to be read at all (Message: Unsupported format) or commence reading, but skip frequently over 'damaged' areas.

Panasonic (apparently, the corporate parent of Matshita) directs us to the PC manufacturer (Apple, in this case) but I find no 'solved' discussions, nor any other information.

Has anyone a definitive recommendation for software updates that might establish full functionality of the drive?

The problem started with a music video CD, as I recall. The optical drive made a chattering, stuttering, 'cha-cha-cha' noise interspersed with occasional grinding noises for what seemed like forever, but was probably only 15 seconds or so. Then the disk would eject. I recall seeing an error message along the lines of being 'unable to establish communications.' The problem has gradually worsened, to the point where commercial audio CDs won't load and a DVD that I burned last night took several tries before it would stay in the drive so that I could play my iMovie. Others failed to load after repeated attempts.

I am a long-time Mac user and my experience has been that Macs are reliable, and that Apple stands behind on the rare occasion when there is a serious problem. That confidence is why I have converted a number of people to the Mac over the years, resulting in the sale of quite a few new Macs. So my expectation (supported by unwavering determination) is that Apple will make good on this problem, as well. I am not paying $488 to fix it.

My hard drive died on me and just barely ran out of warranty so I took it in to get fixed. Started her up to to register and set up again and now my super drive wont even take in a cd. It takes it in about 95% of the way, "thinks", with a slight buzz and then kicks it back out. 3 weeks after my warranty ran out I am like, what the heck, everything dies. I converted to Mac from a PC... 2 mac's to be specific, iMac and Macbook and this is this how it goes?

So I will call the repair shop to see if I can lug the iMac back in to pay and get the drive replaced. IF, IF I buy a new Mac later on down the road I will fork over for the Apple care. Just seems odd there are so many problems happen 3 weeks after the warranty end. And my Macbook has had the top case replaced 2 times and its 7 months old.

3 weeks out of warranty for me and my hard drive and super-drive have died

I have just started having the same issue with my 24 inch iMac. It will still read DVDs (even badly smudged), but won't read audio CDs or application discs. I got one CD to read after inserting multiple times, but haven't been able to repeat that. I thought this might be related to the recent system update, but I'm beginning to suspect that that isn't going to be the case. Bummer.
