I wonder if there are more people that have problems streaming content from YouTube on their iPhone 3G? Its no problem with my first gen. iPhone using the same wifi connection at home. I see that there are some complaints about this while googling, but Im not sure how common it is and what causes it?
FYI... We have 8 Mac's wirelessly networked, along with 3 new iPhone 3G's, and 1 original iPhone all sharing a "cable modem" connection. We have no problems at all. As a matter of fact I just tested my 3G connection (using testmyiphone) and here are the results:
3.19 Mbps
3190 kbps
Right now 4 of the 8 Mac are on... and using the internet.
Just test my conection again (2:59 PM) and here are the results:
I have the same problem. No worries with the wifi speed. Everything else is fast, but Youtube is so slow I don't use it. If I switch to 3g it's very fast, but wifi forget it. Problem is everything else is fine... I'd use 3g all the time only our data is capped here in Australia.
I'm having the same problem: safari is fast, speedtests show my connection to be fine, but when the YouTube app is running over wifi, it runs SLOW. YouTube is fine in safari on my other computers, so it's not something to do with YouTube itself, but rather a very curious 2.0.1 bug.
I have the same problem.
With my iPhone 3G, a WiFi connection with STRONG segnal, watching youtube video is impossible. It always stop, and you have to wait. Then restart and stop again. You are forced to give up.
The same video, watched in a PC with the same internet connection is very faster.
Same problem right here. I can use the Internet just fine speed tests give good results
However YouTube app performance is 10-20 times slower than on 3G.
Same problem here. I'm on 2.0.1 and I get 3500 Kb/s in Speedtest.
Safari, and other internet apps are fast, just YouTube is dog slow.
On a Mac using the same WiFi network YouTube is acting normal, i.e. response is quick.
So it looks like a bug, but not everyone has the problem. I thought they may have fixed it with the 2.0.2 update, but alas no.... Will just have wait until the next update.
I'm sure its not a problem at all - its just a window through Apple's cleverly designed smoke and mirrors approach.
I read somewhere while trying to figure out why iPhone 3G doesn't support flash, that Apple had managed to get youtube to alter their video formats to include some new compatible-friendly version. Now if you access certain sites with your iphone they automatically know that you're using the phone not a computer and often load differently. I thin that while the iphone connects over the mbile network to youtube, it actually streams a lower bandwidth version of the video than you see on the computer to improve streaming speeds, yet when you connect via wifi the phone is trying to display the full-res computer version for some reason and struggles.
This would explain why iPhone's Safari speeds are still good on wifi but the youtube element is lacking...
Oh well. I don't know what that guy talking about in that link. Couldn't find any of those settings in my routers. I must be stupid then or its too advance for me.
Yep, my 3G iPhone also streams youtube videos over 3G effortlessly, however over WiFi its s-s-s-slooooow. It's not my Router - fact. I own a Desktop PC, Laptop, PS3 and Wii - my Girlfriend also owns an HTC touch diamond - Not one of these devices has a problem streaming youtube videos - but on the iPhone? Struggles to loads videos, then plays them for about 5 seconds before stalling again..
To all those reading these words on your iPhone over WiFi, head over to the BBC iPlayer to see how video streaming can and should be done..
