Updating MPeg4 Tracks???

I have been happily transferring tracks from ITunes to my Mini for over a year now. However, since updating to ITunes v6 some of my tracks have been transferred to a different file within cdrive as MPeg4's.

Despite seeing them in the Library these tracks will not upload onto my Mini. I am then faced with a message stating that my software is out of date. Again I have downloaded ITunes v6 but I am still faced with the same dilemma?

Any ideas?

hi Debbie!

b, you're not jumping in, I asked you to look.

you did? i've actually been spending a day here rather than in The Black Hole of Installations & Upgrades, so i might have missed that.

this is kind of fun ... managing to dump little bits of information in threads here that i haven't been able to let people know about from inside I&U ... picking up some nice new stuff here, too.

how's the Mac?

love, b

All thanks for your support on this issue.

Thae latest is...

I went to the Apple Shop today and they restored my Mini Ipod. So it is completely clear now.

I have read the above thread and again I am stuck at the stage:

Go to: Start ==> Programs ==> iPod

I followed the above instructions word for word. When attempt to open the updater via the start menu I can see the new updater file within my ipod directory but when I click on it nothing happens. When selecting this i have no other apps open and my ipod is not connected. As you said above I should not connect it until instructed to do so...?

😟

Pob,

A couple of things:

If you have multiple iPod Updater versions installed, you may have multiple selections to choose from. It may look like:
Start==>Programs==>iPod==>2005-09-23
Or something like that (I have no Updaters installed on my new HD to check this out).

If your iPod cannot be recognized by the PC or iTunes, see:
Your Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod
iPod does not appear in iTunes or on the desktop

Also try Resetting Your iPod
i while it's connected to the computer
.
Hold down the Menu and Select buttons until you see the Apple logo.
This will often get it recognized. It may take several attempts.

Edit: If the Apple Store Restored your iPod, you do not need to run the Updater at this time. It's already done (providing that is what the Apple Store really did....)

You need to get the iPod recognized by the PC and then iTunes.

There are two updaters on my PC now, the old version is in the previous menu.

The Ipod is not visable within Itunes but has been detected within my PC drives.

I have tried restarting using Menu & Select buttons on the Ipon but nothing.

I think am going to have to reinstall everything when I am next online - Tuesday Night. In the interim if you have any ideas please reply to this thread and i will give it a go before I reinstall.

B Noir, StarDeb & Buegie

Thanks for your support so far but i am still experiencing problems.

B Noir I followed your link but I did not go through with it as the step 5 screenshot indicates that you should see the word Ipod next to your E:Drive. Now my Ipod does connect to the E:Drive but it states 'Removable Disk'. Should I press ahead with changing the drive? Could it lead to more damage?

Also following Buegie advise i have tried restarting the Ipod by pressing Menu & Select Buttons while the ipod is connected. It did reset and then referred to point 4 below...

Okay this is where I am currently at...

1. Ipod Restored by Apple Store
2. Version of Ipod Software stipulated on Ipod is 1.4 - I believe this is the most current
3. I have reinstalled ITunes
4. Upon connecting my Ipod the Ipod displays "Do Not Disconnect" and the a prompt appears informing me that...

"This Ipod needs to be reformatted for use on your PC. Click on the Update Button below to run the Ipod Updater application that will allow you to reformat or restore your Ipod"

I have already had the Ipod restored by the guys in the Apple Store and they also uploaded 1.4 software which appears to be the latest version.

Nevertheless I click the Updater button and nothing happens, my Ipod display remains stating "Do Not Disconnect"

Are we out of ideas yet to help me? - Anyone else please feel free to jump in.

Pob,

Even though the Apple Store formatted your iPod, did they do it for
i Windows
use?

See this article to verify its format: How to determine iPod's hard disk format.

Just grasping at straws here....

If you need to re-format it again, then follow these steps:
Go to: Start ==> Programs ==> iPod.
It should initialize then ask you to connect an iPod.
Connect the iPod when asked
b (not before)
and you should have two options available: Update or Restore.
-- Choose the Update option and it will update your iPod's firmware to the latest version.
-- Choose the Restore option and it will update your iPod's firmware to the latest version
b and
format your iPod's hard drive.

Buegie,

Upon my Ipod if I select Settings==> About==>

Songs 0
Capacity 3.7gb
Available 3.7gb
Version 1.4
S/N JQ426339PFW
Model M9160B

The link you sent does not indicate if the software is Mac or Windows if the last item is Model.

As for the re-format. All I have within Start ==> Programs ==> iPod is the Updater which doesn't work, upon selecting this no prompt or anything happens. I followed the instructions in the thread above with regard to downloading the Updater and it failed.

I think I have no choice here now and I'll have to see if Apple are prepared to replace it? The warranty only expired a few months ago, so disappointing!

You missed this part:

i "If your iPod disk is configured for Macintosh, the serial number is the last item you'll see listed in the About screen. If the disk is configured for Windows, the last item you'll see is "Format: Windows.""

The main assumption is that if the iPod is in Windows format, it will indicate this quite directly (and somewhere on that list). Looks like the Apple folks formatted your iPod for Mac use....not Windows.

BTW: My mini ends with S/N, Model, Format. It is also formatted for Windows.

You'll need to format it for Windows for it to be read by your XP system.

Just one thought...

Make sure they have a Windows PC to do the reformat. Not sure they do. Best to call them prior to driving over.

Unless you just like browsing their collection of fun items. My one and only time inside an Apple Store, I found it difficult to leave, and my credit card was getting mysteriously jumpy.... :-D
