iPhone wifi not working

I have a 2g original and yesterday I noticed while at work my wifi indicator kept disappearing and reappearing. I occasionally use Fring to make a call since I have no cell reception in my office but kept getting cut off and I finally gave up but attributed it to flakey wifi at work. Later at home I tried to connect to my airport wifi and found the iPhone searching continuously for a connection but not finding anything. Rebooting my airport base did not help and my laptops were all connecting fine. This morning I tried resetting network settings and rebooted the iPhone several times but it seems permanently stuck in searching mode without ever finding any wifi networks that until now it had no trouble seeing and connecting to. I hate to go through the pain of a full system restore since it's likely this is a result of some component that has died inside - at least I have yet to see anyone say they got it fixed without replacing the hardware itself.

Since ATT coverage is so spotty in my town northeast of Napa Valley I really need wifi so I am really bummed that I have this great communication device that no longer communicates.

I went in yesterday of course I have less than a month until my warranty expired.

Before I saw the genius, an associate asked what's wrong with your phone. I said no wifi, he said WHAT? that's crazy looked at it and said No way it literally says you have NO Wifi. I said yep. He said no worries they will switch it out for you.


Gave them the phone they looked at it and gave me a replacement phone not sure if new or refurbished but works well. My experience was excellent and I am going to get the extended service before my warranty expires.

I agree that the Apple service is pretty great. Unfortunately for me my 8GB iphone was a gift from a friend who bought a new 3G and this one was already out of warranty when he gave it to me (no Applecare). I did drive an hour to the Apple store to have it checked out and they confirmed that the Airport card was dead. So, until I can come up the $200 for repair or replacement I am outta luck on our non-ATT-coverage college campus. I am officially depressed now...

The iPhone does not have an Airport card in it.

Okaaaaaay...there is no Airport Card like you see in laptops, obviously. But there is a wifi chip that most likely contains the same logic as Apple's Airport Extreme Cards and that chip is what is apparently malfunctioning for some people. The genius bar guy actually called it an Airport Card himself (probably thinking that I could relate to the problem better) so that's what prompted me to use the same slightly incorrect language. Anyway, I did also ask if there was an extended warranty program for this issue since I have owned several Apple laptops that had such programs for specific known problems and gotten them repaired after the warranty expired (one was a 7yr extension if I remember correctly). But...NO. Maybe if the complaints get loud enough Apple may yet offer some type of extended warranty for this wifi issue.

My only tip dont waste time trying to fix this.
Only an apple firmware update can fix it.

Think that firmware update will be anytime soon? Looks like this flaky WiFi problem has been around since firmware 2.0 or 2.l. I have an iPhone first gen and it just started this Flaky Wifi stuff on me 2 days ago. This is so frustrating!!!

2 things that got me thinking this is not a firmware issue:

1. If your iPhone is experiencing this WiFi issue and you do a FULL iPhone RESET back to firmware 1.0 or 2.0 whatever it resets to, and WiFi still does not... then it is not a firmware issues.

2. If people have received replacement phones under warranty and these new or referub phones now have working WiFi, then is sounds like it is not a firware issue.

So... it does not seem like a firmware issue, but more like a part is goig bad.

HOWEVER... what are the chances that 100s of us iPhone and iPh-3G are all having the same issue within such a short time span????? So maybe it is a firmware issue.

Personally I think is has something to do with the APPs Store... my iPhone WiFi worked fine. I had not downloaded any new Apps in well over a week and my WiFi was working fine; then I download the iShoot (fodder type) Game. After installing and playing this game, THAT is when I notice my WiFi not working!

Anyone else??

I think it is iShoot too. My wifi stopped working after I installed that a well. I have removed it and thn done a "restore" but it still isn't working. Any other solutions would be goodto hear.

I agree with the take on the software. This is my second round with this issue. The first time I was able to restore as new and wifi worked fine again for 2 months. After installing a few things recently the same issue occurred again. Spent a few hours yesterday doing the same. No luck this time. I have 2G and upgraded to 2.2. Still no change?

I have the same problem. Mine is the 3g version, with only 2 moths of use. I have called Apple Support, and told me that it is a hardware problem. I'm lucky, because my iphone is still in guarantee period.

I am also having the same issues. Out of the blue a couple weeks ago my WiFi just stopped finding SSIDs. I've done network resets, restores with and without backup, all to no avail.

My wife bought my 3G phone for Xmas from the AT&T store. Will Apple honor the warantee at their store or do I have to go to AT&T?

I agree that there seems to be a correlation with iShoot.

My son has an iPhone also, with this same issue (wifi won't connect or disconnects quickly after connecting). My wife's iPhone and my iPhone work fine. His stopped working around the time he tried iShoot. My wife and I never installed it, and ours work fine.

It could be coincidence, any others notice the correlation?

I fixed it!! after months of restoring, downgrading firmware and nearly smashing the phone it took me 5 seconds to fix.

The issue was that it was not able to detect any networks. This is what i did..

1. go to bluetooth settings and switch on bluetooth
2. wait for the bluetooth icon to come up
3. go to wifi settings and you should see all your networks now.

I have the same problem as mentioned above, my iPhone keeps on searching for wifi networks, and sometimes, not often, it happens 1/10 of the time he has found something, there are no problems when using it then, but it is strange... This also is software related I guess?

Had wifi issue with my jailbroken/unlocked 2G since beginning, we also have 3 iPhone 3G in the family, all without trouble, the 2G one just stop working after a while. Have done restore, the various reset-options and downgraded to 1.1.4. It works but when left untouched for a few hours wifi is lost again.

Just done another attempt, downgraded to 1.1.4 again and unlocked/jailbroken with iLiberty. Worked fine, left for 2h and wifi was gone again, did network reset, it works again. Expect to lose wifi again and will try the bluetooth trick even though it really doesn't sound lika a solution, anyone who can explain why that would make a difference?
