Carrier settings update won't install

After I click install I get the following message:

"iTunes could not update the carrier settings on your iPhone. An unknown error occured (0xE8000001)."

Carrier is SoftBank, Japan.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.4), iPhone 3G, 2.0.1 (SoftBank, japan)

Same problem with Vodafone IT (Italy) and as far as I know with all the other Italian carriers, exclusive distributors for the iPhone 3G (TIM, in addition to Vodafone IT) and non-iPhone exclusive distributors (Wind IT and 3 ITA). I just ignored the error, unplugged my phone and it works anyway. The dock excuse is just a guess by Apple techs. I don't have a dock and I plugged the phone directly to my iMac using the cable.
Ciao from Italia.

PS (this is for Apple): are "we" trying to look more and more like Microsoft?

Hi everyone,

*As some users have already said, to remove successfully the error message, just do the following:*

*1) Locate your carrier update file* (Mac OS X: +/Users/Username/Library/iTunes/iPhone Carrier Support/+ and in Windows: +C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPhone Carrier Support+.
*2) Delete it*
*3) The update will not be required for now!*

When Apple decide to give us an updatable file, then it will appear...

Hope this helps!

Thanx, this is the solution.

I was getting the same error and had lost data services on my iPhone, so I went into:

Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings

After the phone restarted, I got my GPRS/3G back and I don't get told by iTunes that I need an update anymore.

Give it a try if you have the same issue and report back.

It looks like the kind of "fixed" the problem. Also here in Italy, no more errors... what I think is that Apple just killed the carrier update. Am I being wrong?

The carrier settings updates don't come from Apple, but from your carrier (Vodafone or whatever). The problem was obviously that the carriers where left a bit behind when Apple release the 2.0.1 firmware. They were sending out carrier updates that weren't 2.0.1 compatible. All that has happened now is that the carriers caught up and put out new 2.0.1 compatible carrier settings files.

The carrier settings updates are not critical and almost certainly failure to apply them will not change anything and your phone will still work.

Michael.

Michael,

I understand what you said and actually makes a lot of sense. Despite that, I'm sure that the carrier's update management is still done by Apple.

It's true to say that the carriers are the responsible to develop their updates as much as they need, but it's still Apple to handle them to the final users.

So I think it's correct to say that those updates come from Apple, because they did release them, via iTunes!

Francisco
