app not installed on iphone b/c unknown error 0xE800002E - caused by dups?

I have had trouble for days updating various iPhone apps from iTunes and I have tried several approaches, none working. The message from iTunes was:

The application "AIM" was not installed on the iphone "AWOLFEII" because an unknown error occurred (0xE800002E).

I could use the apps on my phone, so I let it go. And one of my key Apps (SplashID!) wouldn't update. Then more apps started failing update. So I really needed to do something.

I decided to try the "delete apps on iphone" approach before I did an entire restore.

I deleted the known trouble apps from the phone, then shut it down and restarted.

ONE OF THE DELETED APPS WAS STILL ON MY IPHONE.

I deleted it AGAIN.

Then the apps ALL updated successfully.

I have the same error.

I had to replace my G3 iPhone due to the white plastic cracking problem. I had a hard time doing the restore from backup. After the restore all updates have the same error.

The only solution seems to be to delete the app from iPhone and store, then download it again. iTunes has a record of my downloading, so I don't think I'm charged again even for commercial apps.

I suspect it's some kind of identifier issue -- there's an ID that's now different between the apps on my phone and those in iTunes.

I hope Apple comes up with a fix. This is very annoying.

I ran into the same problem here.

I read about deleted the apps (6 of them: TypePad, AIM, AOL Radio, WordPress, At Bat and Evernote) from your iPhone and syncing to iTunes to reinstall them and that did the trick. (iTunes had unchecked the boxes for the deleted apps so I made sure to re-check those apps so that they'd sync to my iPhone.) Next time, will try updating through the App Store instead of through iTunes.

I had this problem (when running sync I get "App will not install because computer is not authorized". I have a 2G phone. Problem was with iTunes and not the phone. Apps were not on the phone as I recently did a restore to the phone. Click on applications under library (left hand menu), then from the top menu choose store, and authorize computer. Works like a charm.

Cheers,

Jeremy

I also get this issue every time I update an app.

Upgrading via my Touch doesn't work. Subsequently upgrading through iTunes and then syncing results in this error dialog.

Also, iTunes seems to mis-report the number of apps requiring updates.

The workaround of deleting the app seems effective, but has the extremely irritating downside of removing all user preferences from the device.

I note this problem is widespread ( http://www.damienkomala.com/v6/unkown-error-on-the-iphone/).
Seems like a software bug to me.

It seems not...

It is really disappointing. I bought this iPhone 3G because I really needed a mobile device with such amazing features. Now I am spending hours and hours just keep it working. I have no time for this.

Deleting the applications and resync works fine for simple tools. If you delete YouNote for example and resync you get your app back up and running but you loose all saved data. Wow, I really start to hate my iPhone for all the trouble.

I don't know how many bugs apple has to fix, that they don't even manage such a really (I mean REALLY) big issue like updating the software on your iPhone.

Like I said: disappointing in any way...

I've been trying to stay away from applications that store data on the phone and nowhere else for that very reason. Even without the problem with application updates, firmware and OS updates can be can require you to reset the phone to accept the update which would then wipe out the data for all of your applications. Some applications can sync to your desktop, meaning you can recover the information, but i just don't feel safe spending a bunch of time setting up and storing information on the phone without any reliable backup mechanism. Sadly the list of applications that store their database someplace else in addition to the phone is a short one.
