app not installed on iphone b/c unknown error 0xE800002E - caused by dups?

I have had trouble for days updating various iPhone apps from iTunes and I have tried several approaches, none working. The message from iTunes was:

The application "AIM" was not installed on the iphone "AWOLFEII" because an unknown error occurred (0xE800002E).

I could use the apps on my phone, so I let it go. And one of my key Apps (SplashID!) wouldn't update. Then more apps started failing update. So I really needed to do something.

I decided to try the "delete apps on iphone" approach before I did an entire restore.

I deleted the known trouble apps from the phone, then shut it down and restarted.

ONE OF THE DELETED APPS WAS STILL ON MY IPHONE.

I deleted it AGAIN.

Then the apps ALL updated successfully.

Here is the real test. Will an official Apple 3rd party update properly? New version of Remote is available, right? Well, it downloads and actually replaces the older version in my apps folder. It should update right?

NO!!! unknown error 0xE800002E

Have to uninstall Remote from my phone and re-install it, just as before.

So some genius at Apple realized that they have to code the new app to replace the old. Now they need to realize they should rewrite the code again to replace what is on the phone even if it is a different version! sheesh ....

Even if the lengthy restore "fix" mentioned on other threads does work, I'll be ****** if I do a three hour tour for a fix that should take mere minutes!

After upgrading to the latest firmware (2.1), I ran into the same app update problem so I did a reboot of the iPhone but that didn't fix the problem. I decided to just do an iPhone restore and now it works great. I have no problems updating apps via the iPhone or via iTunes. Battery life seems better and I don't find apps crashing as much (except for MobileSafari which has crashed 2x already).

You're lucky, Awolfe II!

I've spent HOURS trying to fix this problem. I've tried all the obvious steps, including everything mentioned in this thread, and on the article to which the help button in the actual error window links.

Deleting all apps is a very annoying workaround, and extremely time consuming after you re-propagate all the application data that is consequently lost - this would barely be acceptable as a fix ONE TIME. Yeah, it updated all my apps successfully, THAT ONCE, but now that some of those apps are ready to update again, we're back to square one, and I'm not going through all that again!

I've decided to stop updating apps all together. At least until they finally fix this bug. The iPhone is "neat" but until this bug goes away, it's not a very practical device. ...Not when I spend more time trying to fix it than I do just using it.

I was excited to start developing for the iPhone, and I still may, but not until they fix this issue.

I'm telling friends/family/co-workers not to buy the iPhone, it's not fully-baked and I've seen no acknowledgment from Apple that they're working on it this issue.

Come on, Apple, this isn't the company I'm used to, let's get with it here.
