app not installed on iphone b/c unknown error 0xE800002E - caused by dups?

I have had trouble for days updating various iPhone apps from iTunes and I have tried several approaches, none working. The message from iTunes was:

The application "AIM" was not installed on the iphone "AWOLFEII" because an unknown error occurred (0xE800002E).

I could use the apps on my phone, so I let it go. And one of my key Apps (SplashID!) wouldn't update. Then more apps started failing update. So I really needed to do something.

I decided to try the "delete apps on iphone" approach before I did an entire restore.

I deleted the known trouble apps from the phone, then shut it down and restarted.

ONE OF THE DELETED APPS WAS STILL ON MY IPHONE.

I deleted it AGAIN.

Then the apps ALL updated successfully.

I'm also running into this problem repeatedly.

It started when I noticed the iphone was no longer prosing any updates to my apps anymore. When I checked the version on the appstore of a couple of apps there had indeed been updates released. In iTunes I forced a check for updates, and it found new versions for 12 or 15 apps ! Problem was, as soon as I tried a sync, none of the apps would get updated, due to this frustrating error.

I've tried rebooting the phone, deauthorizing the computer, then reauthorizing, rebooting the phone. The only surefire method has been deleting the app on the phone, then resyncing.

This workaround is unacceptable for apps with data stored on the phone.

We need both a method for backing up the data (which doesn't take 40 ins) and a fix for this cryptic error....

Even after the 2.0.2 software update, I was having issues...dropped calls, LOTS of "Call Failed" messages, iPod music skipping while using the iPhone & other apps, etc...though not this particular error (yet).

So I restored the iPhone to factory specs tonight, everything seemed fine...then I opened iTunes to grab an updated podcast; saw that 1Password was updated, so I downloaded the update in iTunes to sync to my iPhone 3G. Then I got the 0xE800002E error.

My "solution" was to delete the app from the iPhone; in iTunes, checked the Applications tab with the iPhone still plugged in (1Password was unchecked); re-check the app so it's added back in to the iPhone next time you sync; click on Sync; no more error, problem solved.

Proof that 2.0.2, and software 2.0, still isn't up to snuff yet.

Well, I just saw a post get deleted from the end of this string which at least means that someone who works for Apple is paying attention to it. I have had no luck with the "fix" described in this string. I have deleted Last FM from both iTunes and my iPhone, rebooted both machines, re-downloaded Last FM, and attampted to reinstall, but still I get the 0xE800002E error (same with Cube Runner). I can live without Last FM, but this is discouraging. I also find it annoying that I can't "dismiss" the update notification so it does not show forever on the Appstore icon. Also I can't delete the Last FM button from my iPhone settings if anyone can tell me how to do that, thanks.

I got the 0xE800002E error after downloading updates for four apps for my iPhone.

I went into the Applications tab in "iPhone" in iTunes and unchecked them. (I already had the "Selected applications" radio button selected.) I then pressed the Apply button to sync and delete them from my iPhone. Then I re-enabled them (in the Applications tab) and pressed Apply to sync them back to my phone. I didn't get the error.

I'm having the same problem whether you update through ota, which causes a new version of the program to show, but it has a status saying still needs to be downloaded. Even though the old version is there, and doesn't get replaced. It then says sync with your computer and verify purchases to update. So through out the day, until i sync itunes store randomly asks me for my password. When i finally sync i get 0xE800002E as an error. I uncheck and recheck the program and sync and it works, but not a solution if you have saved data. Also if you try to just update from itunes, and ignore the ota updates, you get a similar error. It's as if the updates don't realize they are replacing the previous version, and instead try to install an additional newer copy of themselves. I think the iphone realizes that there can't be two copies of the same application and then rejects it. Also i have found that updates could be available in the update screen on the phone, but not on itunes, even if i force it to check.

Same problem.

Errors: 0xE8000013 and 0xE800002E

Most of the time Synching a second time did the trick but not always. Sometimes I had to delete the app.

The last occurence was a disaster as itunes refused to remove the app because of the same error and the old version (it was MobileFInder) has vanished from the iphone leaving instead an "Installing…" application that could not be removed. After a reboot I was able to remove this ghost from the iphone and then reinstall it from itunes. But all the data has been LOST. (Hopefuly I had backep up some of the data (but not all).)

All this is becoming VERY annoying.

I can't understand that this has not yet been fixed or even aknlowleged.
Loosing user data seems a VERY critical issue.
How can you rely on a device that can erase your work just by trying to update your software.
I'm quite reluctant to do any new updates until this issue has been fixed.

Same issue here - Been happening to me since the 2.0 update. I am even on my 2nd iPhone 3g (issue with the headphone jack on the first). It's getting worse - I haven't been able to upgrade a single app to its latest version since day one. The other (potentially related??) issue is that apps I purchase on my phone 1) don't fully download - I get a message saying "...will be available the next time you connect to iTunes, and 2) if they were successful, cannot be "transferred" using "Transfer Purchases" back to my computer - it just errors silently. The end result is that I have no backup of apps on my computer, so I'm reluctant to try (again - i've already done it twice!) and restore my phone completely. Might also be worth noting that I've tried sync'ing to both my Mac OS 10.5 and Vista (boot camp) partitions, with the same result (or lack thereof). Just seems to me that iPhone 2.0 (and 2.0.1 and 2.0.2) weren't ready for prime time. Pretty disappointing from a company which prides (and markets!) itself as the error-free alternative to Microsoft! Come on, Apple, how about a fix already??
