iTunes is what installs the iPodService.exe, at least that's what did it on my PC with iTunes v4.9.
After upgrading to iTunes 5.0 I am no longer able to connect my iPod to iTunes. My problem is related to support article 93716. I went through the article and suggestion 1 didn't work. When I got to the next two suggestions where you need to find the iPod Service it is not there at all. I've also checked in my iPod\bin folder and the iPodService.exe file is there. What is the next step I should take?

Sorry to hear v4.9 didn't fix this!

The problem might be somewhere in the deepest and darkest corners of the windows' registry.
As you were rolling back to 4.9, did you make sure anything even remotely connected to the iPodService.exe was gone? I'm thinking of some dll's in either /ipod/bin/... or /itunes/... , that might have stayed unaffected by the downgrade.

I'm pretty sure both the iTunes and iPod/bin folder were gone when I removed 5.1 but I will try again and make sure I get rid of absolutly everything.
Do you know of any registry entries that would be worth looking at just to see what their values are?

My Registry management utility returns 133 entries when I'm searching for ipodservice.
The broken one might be somewhere in
HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\iPodService
or maybe there:
HKEY LOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\iPodService
