I've had iTunes and my iPhone disagree before about updates.

Once it was the same situation that you had - the phone said there was an update but iTunes refused to deliver it. What I did was to go into the app store on iTunes and find that app and download it to iTunes myself. That way I didn't have to download to the phone. Then when I synced, the phone saw it as updated.

Once iTunes told me there was an update but wouldn't tell me what it was. The phone said there were no updates. So I ignored iTunes and within a couple of days it went away.

Just because there's an update doesn't mean you have to install it.

No significant change here, either ... but I haven't been hit by any obvious bugs since 2.0.1, so device-wise I've been sitting pretty. The Contacts app lags at first, but I expect that from an app you start fresh each time, so that's OK by me.

Reception seems a little worse for me. Could be the same. I'll keep an eye on it while out and about tomorrow to get a better sense of that. I still often get "No Signal" or no data connection for a while, seemingly when it tries to pop from GSM to 3G, which is frequent here despite AT&T's maps. 3G to GSM has generally been much better since 2.0.1 for me. I have had fewer dropped calls since 2.0.1, but poor quality.

I wonder if the main purpose for this update (modem firmware rev in particular) was to prepare for Friday's launch in a slew of new markets, and some bug fixes just came along for the ride. Time will tell.

jabecker, you are so right. I had actually waited 3 days for the situation to resolve. Then when I installed 0.2, I decided to see if it was stable enough to handle the OTA (wifi) direct to phone update.

I guess that question was answered!

So far, the only 0.2 change I detect is that contacts do load and jump much more quickly (at least for now - we'll have to see if that is so after a day of use).

I find them by using the iPhone as an RF direction finder (DF). Because the 3G reception is so weak, just follow the signal strength, going toward the increasing strength signal.

Doing this, I have had no trouble tracking to the 3G towers. If you have a large tower farm (3-6 towers), you may not be able to identify which tower is 3G if it is in the cluster, but so far, most that I have found in my area are 100 yards or so from tower farms and, due to the poor 3G reception of the phone, it is - unfortunately - too easy to identify the 3G tower.

Casey recently posted that the current 2.1 beta removed support for the Push Notification services (Apple’s conceptual replacement for multitasking functionality) to allow for more internal development, but perhaps also to fast-track the 3G fix?{quote}

WOW this is awesome, so this will allow developers to use PUSH with chat apps, right?

Been waiting for this, SMS should be free.

Initially my phone refused to take the update after my computer had downloaded it into iTunes. I had to 'cancel sync' on my phone even though the computer/iTunes was showing no signs of a sync in progress. Then after plugging the phone back in, iTunes recognized the phone and began to update the firmware.

It seems .02 gave me contacts that actually respond almost instantly when using the 'jump to a letter' function by holding your finger down on the screen on the right side. Prior to this update the feature worked 1 out of 5 times at best.

Also - does it seem for anyone else that coverflow transitions faster from the standard vertical textual view?

2.0.2 Release, ha! What is the world is going on Steve? Still bad reception, 3G still does not switch to Edge (unless it drains the battery), still drops calls, still one-bar or no service when 3G is on. The device is cool if you are not relying on connections. I love my two Apple computers but hate my OVER-PRICED IPHONES BECAUSE THEY DO NOT PERFORM LIKE WHAT WE HAVE GROWN TO EXPECT FROM APPLE. I wish I was smart enough to have returned these two phones and cancelled my accounts with AT&T within the 30 days but I thought Apple would have made good; but know they won't even admit the problem; MY BAD. I left T-Mobile and took a two hundred dollar hit to get the UNRELIABLE AT&T SERVICE. Well, they still look cool! Steve, your actions in the coming days will make or break me from ever purchasing another Apple product. I am very disappointed.
