HANDBRAKE H.264 PROBLEM SOLVED!! DOWNLOAD HERE!!!

This is a version of Handbrake that enables the "Baseline" profile instead of the "Main" profile. That was the whole problem with the videos not being able to transfer to the iPod when using the H.264 codec. Now, I tried it & it works great!

Yeah, there is no Windows version. Sorry. Just one of the many perks of using a Mac 🙂

BTW, this app rocks now. Finally beautiful H.264 video on my iPod in one easy (and free) step!

Sorry, in my original post I meant to say: P.S. "Thanks to Azdude for getting me this file."

Wow! What a typo I made. I need to lay off that crack, LOL. Just kidding.

Nathan, yup. This is all you need now to make playable H264 video from your DVDs to use on your iPod. Works like a champ!

Just follow the Apple specs for making H264 video & thats it.

So is the problem in handbrake, or do you have to recompile the ffmpeg, I have plenty of apps that produce nice h.264 on the mac that transfer to the ipod.
But I can't find one on the pc side. I'm thinking of starting to look into the source code of one of these open source converters in sourceforge cvs and see if I can't tweak one to work.

But I'm not sure were to start, I'm a very competent java / c++ developer.
Anyone have any ideas.

Nathan, there really isnt that much to it. Here are the specs from Apple:

H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats

The problem was in Handbrake itself. It was originally set up to use the "Main" profile for H264, but the iPod needs "Baseline" profile to play.

I wouldnt know where to begin on XP, sorry.

yes, I looked at the source for ffmpeg, couldn't see anything that really stood out. But without documentation its not a fun program to debug.

Makes me glad I have both macs and pcs.

Really I mostly use my powerbook for everything, even when I need to do something in visual studio, I just connect to the desktop pc in my spare room via wi-fi using microsoft remote client for macs.

For java development I perfer the mac, and I'm really starting to like xcode.

Not sure how much time I want to spend on trying to make h264 work on windows, its just that the h.264 encoding I did with 42dvdvxplus on the mac look better than the mp4 with nerorecode on windows, But the xp machines are faster.

I dont totally understand it all myself. But, it seems to me that different profiles are used for different projects. H.264 can be in 4 different profiles, where "baseline" produces the smallest file size & is considered the little brother of the other profiles.

The other 3 in order are "Extended, Main, High" profiles. As you go up the ladder, they each offer more/better framing & the "high" profile is considered a lossless format.

The "baseline" profile suits the iPods needs perfectly because video doesnt need to be stellar, just good enough to watch on the tiny screen, be small in file size & work well with all the iPods guts.
