Date and time on my iPhone keeps changing to GMT or Cupertino time

Hi,

Somehow my date and time settings keeps changing to GMT/Cupertino despite setting it to Mumbai (India). Because of this all my alarms and calendar events have gone for a toss. I have changed the time to Mumbai multiple times, but it keeps switching back without event touching the phone. I even upgraded to 2.0.2 but the problem persists. Any idea what else can I do to get this working.

Thanks,
Avinash

Tried backing up my iPhone and restoring it as suggested. Didn't solve the problem. Still it goes back to GMT automatically.
One thing I observed, the time goes back to GMT only after the phone is not getting any signal from vodafone (like is a lift etc...) and then when it reconnects to the n/w. If you change the setting to mumbai and the phone doesn't lose n/w connection then timezone doesn't change. Did anyone else noticed the same behaviour?

@avidmani - Thanks for sharing that. With me, the time error comes twice a day - once in the morning around 8.40am (or when I'm near one location between Lower Parel and Mahalakshmi) and then in the evening (I will track that today and post here again).

I'm not touching any settings on the iphone, simply because I'm too scared! If anything goes wrong, I know Apple will cancel my warranty and blame me for any mistake (I've had too many encounters with these large companies to know that none of them will ever support the customer). Vodafone, of course, will say they didn't manufacture the phone and can't be blamed.

I'll have to endure this miserable problem, even after paying Rs35,000 for this premium phone in India.

Given this experience, it's clear that Apple doesn't care much about their customers. After buying an ipod Nano, a Macbook and now an iPhone, I'm not buying an Apple product ever again, and will certainly not be recommending it to anyone I know.

Update - My iPhone didn't change time today. This means that the change in time zone happens only when I pass a certain area (and since I didn't pass that area today the time remained the same). I will re-test this tomorrow when I pass that area again.

However, there's another problem. While the display time is accurate, the time in 'Recents' seems to be on its own trip. For example, when I called on the iphone right now, it showed the time of the call as 8.10pm (which is correct) but showed an earlier call as the most recent call (showing it's time as 9.17pm..which hasn't even happened yet).

Bottomline - there is still a bug that is messing up the time inside the iphone.

I noticed the same. 2 days I was at home and the phone didn't change time cause it never lost the signal. But today morning again it kept flipping to different times. Because of that all calender events that were supposed to happen today throughout the day started beeping in the morning itself. After some time, the time again came to normal (timezone is still GMT though), but the calender events keeps going off randomly. So i had to shut the sound off.
All we need is an option "set automatic date time" and changing it to off will solve the problem. But as our luck has it.. this option is not present. ***...

And sure enough, my iphone time flipped back to GMT today at the same time at the same location.

But guess what? I have another problem - the iPhone clock keeps getting slow on its own. Not surprisingly this is ALSO a known issue (not only with the iPhone but with the pod and touch too it seems) and there's an unresolved thread on this as well. I've posted there too.

Amazing..doesn't Apple even realise how important the time is to every function of the cell phone? Calendar, email, business, reminders, recents..everything is on the basis of time. And Apple is blissfully selling this faulty thing!

Here's some news...Hope this works.
Talked to Vodafone guys again today. He asked me to set the timezone to New Delhi instead of Mumbai. Seems they have set Delhi in their system.
After setting the timezone to Delhi, I used elevator twice and even turned on Airplane mode and turned it off to simulate n/w loss. The timezone has not changed yet. Will observe over the weekend and update. I suggest you guys also try it out.
And post your observations.

@avidamani - lol..I don't rely on the battery at all. I've seen it go down with continued use of the ipod, etc. So typically I dock it to my PC once a day for a couple of hours. I've also purchased a car charger to be on the safe side.

However, I dread the day when (not if) the phone hangs. Unlike Nokia where you can easily remove the battery and put off the phone, in case of the iPhone you'll have to wait for the battery to die out. Horrid and I hope it never happens.

Changing it to Delhi worked for me. Only time the time screws up is when i go out of coverage area and the phone again reconnects. For a split second the time screws up and then again it goes back to normal IST time and the world clock etc are proper then. But for that split second when it goes bonkers, all my alarms and events for that day start beeping. So its still annoying... but a bit less. I think its the iPhone that needs time from n/w. unlike other mobiles which can keep time by themself.

Everyone told me not to buy iPhone. I also decided not too.. buy saw one and couldn't resist. Think thats how it is... all beautiful outside and nothing inside lol

@avidamani @ashishpp - I've noticed that the exact time that the clock goes back to GMT is 8.45am. And this happens only when I am in the Worli location. If I'm at home then this problem does not happen.

Another thing that I wanted to ask you guys is do you face time loss on the clock? For example if you set the time at 9.00am then at 12noon does it show like 11.45am? and you have to the reset it manually? I am facing that problem as well (for which there is a separate thread in progress which is, not surprisingly, unresolved).

Thanks
A

Anupam..
think my time changes around the time you mentioned.. not really observed.. but this is the time i move from home to office..

Have still not noticed the problem of loss of time.. the clock is pretty much accurate in my case.

do think its a vodafone issue which has not been integrated and worked upon by apple.

the wait continues....
