Error 4280 when trying to burn a CD...but not all the time

Hi,

I hope someone can help me.

I have never had issues before but in the last few days it has been HORRIBLE.

I have brand new CDs to burn to and sometimes I get an error to insert a blank disc(how can it not be it is brand new)

Other times I try to burn a disc and get:

"the attempt to burn a disc failed an unknown error occured(4280)

I have deauthorized and reauthorized my PC. Some of the songs I am burning are ones I loaded from a CD that I had burned one before with NO problems.

I have wasted at least 10 CDs in the last few days trying to get this to work.

I have checked EVERYWHERE for a list of Error Code numbers but I can find it anywhere.

It will check playlist then start to "write" a song and it stops.

ANY help would be appreciated I am seriously losing my mind!!

I made sure I had the latest version of ITunes and upgraded last night to be sure and I am the admin on my PC and I am the only one that uses it.

I was able to burn one this AM and then the next one the errors happened again.

I have seen a lot of fixes that ask if my drive is

Sony CD-RW/DVD CRX830E model drive

It is not when I did the diagnostic to figure out my drive I get this(and I have tried burning as low as 4X

The last failed audio CD burn had error code 4280(0x000010b8). It happened on drive F: PHILIPS CDD4851 CD-R/RW on CDR media at speed 8X.

Is there ANYONE that can help or at least point me in the correct direction

Thank you

Compaq, Windows XP

I'm having the same problem! I'm ready to throw my computer out the window! First I had error 4251. So I made sure I had all the updates. Now I'm getting error 4200. I've tried Sony and hp cd's and I have this problem with both! I've waisted so many cd's and I'm so frustrated! If anyone ever finds out how to fix this annoying problem, PLEASE let me know!

I don't know if this is going to help or not, but I was playing around with the Max Burn Speed on my laptop. I changed it to 2x thinking "must be a speed problem", but was still getting the error 4280.

I just changed it to x16 and it decided to burn. I haven't restarted or anything yet. Hope this works for others out there!

Son of a... Okay, after my last post I seemed to be fine... Could burn all the CD's I want (although I didn't burn that many, but still I could)... Now after upgrading to the latest version, I try to burn a CD and can't...

Jesus, I upgraded hoping they fixed this but nope... I tried restarting, but that didn't help... I again had to rely on Windows Media Player to give iTunes a "helping hand"... I burned a CD for a buddy (in WMP) and after that burned, iTunes started burning...

WTH Apple?¿? Why does "my" iTunes need a crutch to be able to burn without getting an Error 4280 message?¿?

Just started getting this error with upgrade to 7.6.2.9 and most recent upgrade to 8.0. I've tried burning to Maxell CD-R cds with the same "Itunes unknown error 4280" message. I did get one cd to burn successfully but this has failed the other 8 times I've tried this. No real difference in the attempts, but it apparently got lucky at least once.

I'm disappointed that there doesn't seem to be any official answer from Apple on this (from what I'm seeing). This is extremely annoying.

hello all, I've been getting this error also on and off for the past few months. I never really looked into until now. Recently its been giving me this error more than ever. I could only burn 1 cd out of the 20+ attempts using Sony CD-Rs(only ones I have or else I would of tried another brand), and I called support. The guy I spoke with took me through all the usual troubleshooting steps (i.e retart, uninstall/re-install, reboot itunes, etc.) and to no avail. He assumed it was a conflict with the computer I am using, but I don't believe that. And at the end of the convo, he basically said I was SOL, which made me mad beyond belief. Can anyone out there catch a break and find a fix for this issue?!?

I used to have a similar issue. But now I have an even greater one. Every time I try to burn a CD with iTunes (and I have tried several times with different CD formats, types, etc.) iTunes makes my computer stop working. Let me explain. iTunes begins to burn the CD, but then gets stuck it seems like, and what's more it prevents any other application from running. I have no choice but to turn the computer off by force. I've contacted HP technical support and followed their steps to update my driver, and I still have the same problem. What's more, iTunes now tells me that the registry to burn and import CD's is missing and to reinstall iTunes. I have tried reinstalling numerous times, and I still get the same error message. Any help or ideas?

I have the same problem with the no burn and 4280 error message. I also have been using SONY CD-Rs...will try a different brand. It really ****** me off that I've wasted like 10 cds...these things aren't free.

One thing I've noticed is that itunes will let me burn CDs from my own store-bought collection. The problem only seems to exist with itunes purchased music...it must be related to the recent itunes software upgrade.

Hi all, I've also had this problem for over a year. I tried slowing the burn speed, changing to data cd, un and re-installing itunes, updating computer, turning off anti-virus temporarily in order to burn, changing disc brands (to higher quality) even though my old discs used to burn just fine. My cd drive is not broken, which I've had support claim. Not sure why this is happening, but I seemed to have tried it all.

The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred.(4280) I just started receiving this message as well even though in the past I was able to back up my iTunes purchases. However, I was able to burn a disc from songs downloaded from other websites as well as my own CDs. This has been extrememly frustrating and disappointing that iTunes is not willing or able to solve this problem. I just tried changing the speed to 16X, but that did not work either. Has anybody been able to solve this problem?

Same problem but differant error code,4450. I just posted a response to a message about this code. E-mailed apple and they had me try to make some changes in my registry. Said there might be some filter causing the problem. That wasn't it, had to restore old settings. They gave a link to this board and this problem has been going on for a while. Finally called apple and the guy couldn't find any codes that matched what I was getting and since my warrenty on my ipod expired he couldn't help. These problems did seem to start after I loade itunes 8 also.
