30GB at full capacity at only 3222 songs?!

Why does my new iPod with a 30GB capacity fill up with only 3222 songs? The advertisements and packaging claim that it should hold up to 7500 songs yet I can only fin about 3000. My library says I have 40GB of songs but only 3222 actual songs. What is wrong? Is there a way to compress those 3222 songs into 30GB instead of 40GB? What's happening?!

Like I said though, I'm not at my computer. I'm at work so...Let's assume they are all the same though, 320kbps. What then? Is there simply an option when I right click on the songs to reformat? Do I have to highlight the ones and go to ADVANCED>REFORMAT? I don't know. I'm guessing. But let's assume for now they ALL the songs on my PC are at a very high compression rate. What then?

I'm not trying to be difficult, but it's a little hard when I'm not sitting in front of my computer 'ya know.

Yes you can in Windows explorer if you choose to view the properties of the file.

If the file extension is .mp3 rather than .m4a you are not using the AAC codec.

At this point as others have suggested, use iTunes, do a select all(CTRL+A), right click on your tunes and select convert.

I hope you have some patience. Depending on the power of your computer, THIS WILL TAKE TIME.

It took me nearly 10 hours to covert my entire library using the aac codec from Apple+iTunes

Hi Mark, welcome to discussions.

Honestly, I avoid Windows like the black plague... so I can't really help you or suggest any software for you.
You might want to repost your question as a new topic, so it would be easier for others to find your post and answer your question.

You've sort of hijacked this thread, which makes it difficult for others to find your post and answer it properly.

Apple is real specific about song capacity. They have to be imported using the right settting.

"Song capacity is based on four minutes per song and 128-Kbps AAC encoding."

To check what your importing at in iTunes, right click any song and "get info" or... Select the "Edit" menu, click on "Preferences", and then select the "importing" tab under the "Advanced" tab. This is how your music is currently being imported. If it's at a higher rate than mentioned above, your not going to get the full 7500 songs because they'll be larger files.

Andrew, I have both a mac and PC, it's no different. I have wiped my iPod 20GB photo out and tested with both. I have over 3500 songs..

Bottom line. Convert your entire library using the AAC encoder IN iTUNES.

Erase your exisiting library from your iPod and resync the files that have been re-encoded.

if you want, you can reduce your bit rate to like 80 or even 64 and gain even more space. BUT YOU WILL LOSE QUALITY!
