Bluetooth Headset mic records static sound only

Hi Everybody.

I see there are some posts here that talk about difficulties using bluetooth headset on a Mac. I just wanted to outline my own specific issue in hopes that someone had the same experience and have a solution.

I have a MacBook Pro (current line) which I have tried to use a bluetooth headset with in order to use for Skype calls. First I tried using the Sony Ericsson HBH-PV703 which paired without problems and I can hear audio just fine. However, the mic does not record my voice, it gives off this strange static sound that beats periodic. I thought this was due to using a cheap headset so I decided to get a nice one. I got the Jawbone 2, but same thing happens. The audio comes out clear, but static on through my mic.

This is not a Skype issue, because I can easily record the static sound through Quicktime pro or I can just observe the sound with the Sound Input system preference.

Anyone else experience this?

Thanks.

MacBook Pro 2.5GHz 4GB RAM, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Yes, my planatronics headset came with a dongle. I bought it because the machine I was using prior to my new iMac did not have built in Bluetooth. It works great, but it does take up a USB port and since there are only three USB ports on this Mac I either have to get a USB adapter or plug and unplug when I need to use it. It would be much better if it worked with the built in Bluetooth.

Hope this helps.

I took my new Platronics headset into the Apple Store here in Japan and paired it up with an iMac in the store and after about 1min. the same thing happened. The input meter in the settings was going full blue.

The didnt know why or what to do so they just refunded me the money. Basically the headsets they are selling in the store are meant to be used with the iPhone and not a computer.

The other thing that go to me, was i then went to our local Electronics store and all the cable headsets were only for windows computers. Not for Mac.

Exactly the same problem here but I use a Genius HS-03U USB Headset (Elite Silicon USB audio chip), Mac OS 10.5.5, MacPro 2008. After approx. 1 min. I get a full peak static noise on the input channel. Selecting another input device and choosing the USB Audio Device again makes the noise go away then it starts again after around 1 minute. Terrible!

The headset works perfectly on a cheap PC under Windows XP that is standing beside my MacPro 2008. It doesn't require any additional drivers, neither under OS X or Windows.

Apple should really fix this problem, quickly! So many users are affected by this.

I am also experiencing exactly this problem. I think that this problem may be specific to some Mac Pros. I've tested this on 2 different Apple computers, using 2 different Bluetooth headsets, and the problem does not appear to be headset specific.

The problem never occurs on my son's iMac using 10.5.5
The problem does not occur on my Mac Pro with 10.5.2
As soon as I update from 10.5.2 to 10.5.5 on my Mac Pro the problem returns

I'm going to run a few more tests to see if I can isolate exactly which "software update" breaks my system, but to be honest about it I don't have much more time to throw at this.

My best guess at this point is that > 10.5.2 is not compatible with the built-in bluetooth in some Mac Pros. Since 10.5.4 was shipping when I bought my Mac Pro, and since the system is still under warranty, I consider that this behavior constitutes a defective product.

Still need to check with Apple to see what recourse they recommend. Perhaps an updated logic board will solve this problem....

Wish I had looked here first. I just bought a Motorola H710 because I assumed there was an incompatibility problem with my BlueAnt X3 micro... Can add those two models to the list of headsets that have this issue.

Console shows this error:
12/20/08 5:54:13 PM com.apple.launchd[187] ([0x0-0x1a41a4].com.apple.BluetoothAudioAgent[2830]) Check-in of Mach service failed. PID 2830 is not privileged: com.apple.BluetoothAudioAgentDOServer

whenever I try to use the headset. Same symptoms as everyone else here... mic works for about 30-60 seconds after first pairing, then only repetitive clicky static. Removing/repairing the device doesn't help, nor does anything else I've tried. Started for me when I upgraded to Leopard a couple of weeks ago (10.5.5, and now 10.5.6).

Would sure be nice to hear something from Apple on this... at least a "we're aware and working on it." Does apple read these forums?

so, after deleting the com.apple.bluetooth.plist and restarting, and repairing my headset, here are the errors that happen thruout the process:

When I first pair, audio works (in the sound prefs panel) for about 30 seconds then switches to the static sound. At that moment, this errors shows in the console:
12/20/08 6:41:39 PM mDNSResponder[85] Client application registered 2 identical instances of service ChadsG5. openbase.tcp.local. port 20221.

then when I disconnect the headset, I get this row of errors:
12/20/08 6:41:39 PM mDNSResponder[85] Client application registered 2 identical instances of service ChadsG5. openbase.tcp.local. port 20221.
12/20/08 6:42:14 PM kernel E:[AppleUSBBluetoothHCIController][IsochInReadHandler] error e00002eb isoch pipe
12/20/08 6:42:14 PM kernel [AppleUSBHCIController][HandleIsochData] Got error - e00002eb
12/20/08 6:42:14 PM kernel E:[AppleUSBBluetoothHCIController][IsochInReadHandler] error e00002eb isoch pipe
12/20/08 6:42:14 PM kernel [AppleUSBHCIController][HandleIsochData] Got error - e00002eb

Further attempts to reconnect the headset throws:
12/20/08 6:50:26 PM kernel [AppleUSBHCIController][HandleIsochData] Got error - e00002eb

and further disconnects throw:
12/20/08 6:58:00 PM kernel E:[AppleUSBBluetoothHCIController][IsochInReadHandler] error e00002eb isoch pipe
12/20/08 6:58:00 PM kernel [AppleUSBHCIController][HandleIsochData] Got error - e00002eb
12/20/08 6:58:00 PM kernel E:[AppleUSBBluetoothHCIController][IsochInReadHandler] error e00002eb isoch pipe

Maybe that'll help somebody who knows things...

Using the same Sony Ericsson HBH-PV703 on 10.5.6, I was able to get the mic working initially for about a minute, until the mic started exhibiting the same static/heart beat behavior.

I've called Apple support regarding this, and they said basically that because it's third party hardware it is difficult for them to isolate the problem. I suspect it is driver related.

I will exchange the headset for another early next week, test it and post the results in here. I'm curious as to whether this is a general bluetooth issue (which could possibly be fixed with an older kext [kernel extension]), or a specific third party hardware issue.

sudo dmesg gives me this error:

E:[AppleUSBBluetoothHCIController][IsochInReadHandler] error e00002eb isoch pipe
[AppleUSBHCIController][HandleIsochData] Got error - e00002eb
E:[AppleUSBBluetoothHCIController][IsochInReadHandler] error e00002eb isoch pipe
[AppleUSBHCIController][HandleIsochData] Got error - e00002eb

The problem is I don't see anything in /System/Library/Extensions/ that match! So, I don't even know where to begin with this one.

I'm on X86 hardware by the way.

I was able to delete the pairing, restart the computer, and re-pair the headset. It worked fine for just over a minute, until the microphone got progressively more static over 10 seconds or so, and I lost all microphone input to a static/heartbeat sound.
