iTunes 8.0 gathers data about my music library well enough and sends it to Apple too; but then 10-15 seconds into "processing" by Apple, iTunes stops and reports that "Genius results can't be updated right now. An unknown error occurred (4010)." I thought it might be overloaded servers and tried several more times in the hope of squeezing my request in between those of everyone else; but that didn't work; plus if it were a server issue I'd expect to see postings here from others with the same problems, and I'm not.
John,
You are not alone. Same problem here as well. I am wondering if 29GB of library has anything to do with it, or is it just 500K people hitting the servers as well. I have fond memories of the old days when there were less mac users... 😉
I don't get the unknown error 4010 but everything else keeps happening to me. In the end it just says that the network timed out and I know my network is fine.
I'm with you there, i am not getting an error (My itunes library is 3TB) but once its done its scan it is stuck at step 2 "Sending Information to Apple" and it been there since 4pm yesterday (its 11:57am now) nobody has any ideas?
Edit: this is the error message i am getting now "This Seems to be taking longer than usual, but is still sending your information to apple and will move on to the next step as soon as possible. In the meantime, feel free to keep using itunes."
I have a large library (100gigs) but it seems like everyone else, regardless of library size, is having the same issue. Mine actually finishes sending the data to apple and gets hung up when "delivering genius results". It has made it 3/4 of the way before deciding to time out. I have tried everything from reinstalling to removing any and every 3rd party app connected to itunes. I am at a loss as this problem has persisted for about 24 hrs now and I have tried at least a dozen times.
I am having the same problem, and I suspect that it's related to the size of my library. I got the 4010 error on my 42GB library, so I created a new user on my Mac and imported a dozen songs into iTunes. Genius worked just fine. Then I imported the rest of my songs into the new library and told Genius to update, and got the 4010 error again.
Just a point of clarification. While I'm not surprised by the size of many libraries identified here (120GB personally), the Genius process isn't sending all the data to the servers for information gathering. Rather it is parsing, uploading, analyzing and returning results based on the "iTunes Music Library" file which is an XML file that contains the information regarding the "data" files accessed through iTunes. The actual files aren't sent but rather the parsed artist/album/genre info, along with your usage statistics and playlist info. This file is typically in the "kb" size for small libraries to "MB's" for larger libraries. With 120 GB worth of data, my iTunes Music Library.xml is less than 30 MB. Mind you, that is a massive XML file to parse but it's not due to the Gigabytes worth of files comprising your iTunes library. Not a big issue but just for clarification.
The issues identified appear to be due to server load. Mine took approx 5 minutes to upload, analyze and return info at around 10:30pm CST last night. Keep trying and it should go through.
I just got a call from an Apple employee who noticed the posts here. He asked for my "Genius ID" which I emailed to him. He said he is going to forward the Genius IDs to the engineering team for troubleshooting.
I guess my Genius data isn't going to be anonymized any more! 🙂
this is what i did, i have been having a lot of problems with itunes and the itunes store.. i changed my store preferences from Shopping Cart to "Buy and download using 1-click" then i restarted itunes and all my downloads started working (including my podcasts) and also the Genius just instantly communicated with apple and finished the setup, also all the HD downloads that said "unavailable" in my shopping Cart i went back and reclicked them and they started downloading as well. you guys can give this a try and it see if it works for you guys.
I got the same phone call. I asked about privacy (just on principle) and was assured that information about me would not be used or passed on, this was strictly an engineering issue.
I took this on faith. I think Apple would be opening itself up for a big class action if somehow the RIAA went after someone using info obtained through this genius bug.
I really don't know why this worked but did it on a whim due to anther post.
I set up a new user and logged into that user. I then set up itunes w/o any music. I did the whole genius thing and it worked on my empty library. I then went back to my user account and tried again. It took a while but it worked. I am at a loss for why it worked but if you aren't too busy and like me hate it when you can't figure something out then give this a shot.
I too am having problems w/ Genius. I've been stuck at "Sending information to Apple..." since I downloaded the update 18 hrs ago and I've tried just about everything from restarting to disabling firewalls. I have about 5000 songs (~30 GB) on my MacBook Pro w/ most recent updates.
The one thing that seemed to work was when I completely reset my iTunes Library file and started Genius w/ only 50 or so songs. I've also tried this on my other mac (a Mac Mini G4) and got the same exact results. However, I know others who are getting much larger libraries to work so I have no idea what the problem is.
