How To Copy DVDs to iPod using free software for Windows

To take existing DVDs that you have around the house and put them onto iPod:

You'll need two programs, DVD Decrypter and Videora iPod Converter.

Now, use this step by step tutorial for converting DVDs with DVD Decrypter. Note: Once you reach the part about PSP Video 9, stop watching and use the 'One Click Transcode' option in Videora to select and convert the VOB file that DVD Decrypter produces.

Once you have a converted file, add it to iTunes in the same way as music (drag it into the iTunes library) and it will automatically copy across to your iPod.

Though it seems Stanley's ghost kept me from playing a nice 320 x 240 rendition of "The Shining" (900+ MB) on the iPod (transferred fine just wouldn't play), American Wedding and the SNL 25th Anniversary worked flawlessly!

"To save space on your iPod, deselect the end credits chapter when you are about to use DVD Decrypter. This saved me about 600mb off the decryption file size; not sure how much on the mp4 file size"

How do you do that? I do not see a menu that allows me to deselect chapters. Some dvds play movie trailers before going to the movie menu, is it possile to take that out too?

Hi Guys - Jamie, Thanks for the software tips - worked like a charm. Did encounter one problem though. Didn't catch were to change the videora output file name. After converting my second movie (created with the same file name as the first ) it erased the first movie file on my pc. The first movie is still on the ipod and working but now I get a error message everytime I download anything into my ipod ( message says I cannot transfer the movie to my renamed ipod ) , I added another word to my ipods name after downloading the first movie. Where do I change the output file (videora ) name? What problem will I have because of the deleted pc file ( even though the movie is still working fine )?

I followed all the steps, but my movie is cut into chapters in my ipod. i could play the chapters on my ipod, but i want to play the movie from beginning to end. there is a 5 or 10 second gapes between chapters.
how do i fix that

Thanks Jamie for your help. I an curious as to whether or not anyone knows of a way or program to convert or compress a dvd file to the size of 1 or 2gbs without compromising origional video resolution or quality using a PC.

If you want the file for playback on a PC, then DVD Shrink will do just that. You can get a copy of DVD Shrink at their website:

What do you mean?

The tutorial in this post specifically produces a single file for conversion to MPEG-4, how did you obtain multiple files?

well, in the dvd it had 6 .vob files which i all converted to mp4 in videora, they all work but are 20mins long, and i want to put them in one file

(sorry, *attempting the tutorial now, im one of these ppl that dont go by instructions, try first then admit fail and go by instructions after A LOT of wasted time, hehe)

Oh I see...

It might be safer to use the single file tutorial, as you can never really guarantee that a program to combine the files will produce a fully iPod compatible video.

ok, well, im getting my hopes up, this looks promising, ive been attempting this whole 'video thing' since noon (GMT) and i have like 79 different files for editing converting etc, and im at the point of giving up but... im doing the tutorial now so hopefully itll work, if it does there will be a very happy post in this topic!! 😉

Can I rename the video file to the name of the movie I tried it, and it still came up under the original file name that Videora gave it

I followed these instructions and was able to get an episode of South park on perfectly. however now when i try it the audio on the movie always skips and gets messed up. Any ideas on why it does this?

You can rename the converted file once it is finished. It will appear in iTunes as the original filename until you update the track information for it. Right Click and select 'Get Info', just like a song.
