I'm running Windows Vista 64-bit and I just installed iTunes 8. The Apple Mobile Device Support software failed to install (you could see it rolling back during the installation). I've tried removing everything (iTunes, Quicktime, Apple Updater) according to the instructions on the support site and then tried reinstalling with no luck again. I also tried running the mobile device support installer by itself but that didn't work either.
This solution isn't working for me, the 7.7 driver still rolls back after the installation. i just don't know what to do now, my PC is running great with 64bit vista, and i don't really want to go back to 32bit
When I try to install the AMDS I get an error message that says "A later version of AMDS is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue." So I go to the control panel and remove it, and I get the same thing.
When I try to install the itunes the error message I get says "The file itunes library.itl cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes".
That's because it wasn't actually uninstalled. I've seen this before - what you need to do is:
1. (Sometimes needed) Open up windows task manager (ctrl
altdel), go to the "Processes" tab, select each task, then click "end process" (make sure you don't have any ipod/iphone/etc. devices connected to the computer): AppleMobileDeviceService.exe*32, iPodService.exe*32, iTunesHelper.exe*32 (if don't have all of these, that's fine).
2. Go to control panel and uninstall in this order: Apple Software Update (optional), Quicktime, iTunes (requires reboot), and finally AMDS.
It does not as iTunes 8.02 requires a newer driver version, and will not work with the 7.7.1.11 drivers. It shouldn't be an issue though as I installed and uninstalled 8.02 once I found out, and library and playlists all loaded fine in 8.01.
In the iTunes folder (usually something like C:\Users\(your user name)\Music\iTunes), I have a folder called "Previous iTunes Libraries", and inside is an older version of the "iTunes Library.itl" file, usually with a date appended. Try replacing your current itl file using this (i.e., rename the older file "iTunes Library.itl" by deleting the date, and replacing the one in the iTunes folder). And don't forget to make a backup/copy of the original before replacing.
I tried this and I still get the AMDS error. The itunes library error is fixed, though. (THANK YOU) When I was still trying to figure this out on my own I manually deleted the Applemobiledevicesupport.exe file. I read later on an itunes tutorial on this site that you are NOT supposed to do that. Is this why I can't uninstall it properly? How do I fix it? If I can't uninstall it then I can't reinstall it properly.
nothing is working for me, running the AMDS from a command line makes no difference, and i don't see why it would but anyway, i'm beginning to get extremely frustrated with this.
it doesn't matter what driver i use, any 64bit driver just rolls itself back and uninstalls.
I have finally gotten this problem fixed. I had to do a complete restore on my computer. It turned out the the PC Mover cord I used to transfer my programs from my old computer to the new one wasn't able to convert files between XP and Vista 64 bit. Everything was corrupted, there was just enough of the program there to keep the new one from downloading but not enough to actually work right. After the restore I downloaded all my programs (including iTunes) in their 64bit compatible forms. So far all is working well. My ipod syncs and I have all the most current versions of everything. Good luck to the rest of you. I hope you all get yours working as well.
Casper, reading through this tread you have been very helpful. I have the same problem as most have been reporting with the AMDS, whenever I tried to uninstall the 5 Apple programs, AMDS would rollback and reinstall. Apple Tech Support has been extremely patient working to identify and resolve the problem. They talked me through using this MS utility and it did successfully remove AMDS, however, subsequently we have been unable to reload the AMDS program back in. They talked me through going into Services, where you can start/stop individual processes (similar to what is described below on this thread). By stopping the AMDS service, the thought was uninstalling and reinstalling all related Apple programs would resolve the issue, it did not and AMDS still does not show up on my program list.
The Apple contact I am working with, again very helpful, noted that Apple support is now receiving many reports of this same problem. My classic iPOD still works fine with iTunes, just won't sync with my new iTouch on my 64-bit Vista OS.
FYI, I uninstalled all Apple programs from my laptop (Vista 32-bit) and downloaded iTunes. My iTouch syncs fine with iTunes on that machine, so for me this issue is isolated to the Vista 64-bit OS.
I am sure that Apple will resolve the issue, hope it is sooner rather than later.
