Apple Mobile Device Support fails to install

I'm running Windows Vista 64-bit and I just installed iTunes 8. The Apple Mobile Device Support software failed to install (you could see it rolling back during the installation). I've tried removing everything (iTunes, Quicktime, Apple Updater) according to the instructions on the support site and then tried reinstalling with no luck again. I also tried running the mobile device support installer by itself but that didn't work either.

Please help, I need to get my iphone reconnected!

My Solution: (And I'm so glad it worked: i'm writing this while it syncs)
The Apple Mobile Device support folder is put in a wierd location in Windows Vista x64 so most people don't remove it before reinstalling it. Go to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple and there it is. Delete it, rename it, or move it and uninstall itunes (uninstall itunes, quicktime, and apple update service), restart your computer, now go get http://chris123nt.com/files/iTouchReg.zip edit the one called AMDS and change the version number under Apple Mobile Device Support to "Version"="2.1.2.7" Now double click each registry key and merge them; NOW install the latest version of itunes.
If that doesnt work try this: http://chris123nt.com/2008/11/10/get-ipod-touch-working-in-windows-7-x64/

Dear SKCUD9880,

I just found a solution on my Dell XPS running 32 bit Vista. I had to turn off User Account Control through the Control Panel. That then requires a restart. After that, I still wasn't able to delete the Apple Mobile Device Support folder, but I was able to rename it!

I then restarted User Account Control, and uninstalled all Apple Software. I downloaded the latest installer for iTunes 8. It ran without any problems.

This has been killing me for months, but it is finally over.

Thanks Alavan, I'll give this a try later tonight (Had a feeling this was a registry problem of some kind). Just to followup, Apple responded earlier after I logged the bug and apparently this is a known issue (see copied message below):

"This is a follow up to Bug ID# 6424434. After further investigation it has been determined that this is a known issue, which is currently being investigated by engineering. This issue has been filed in our bug database under the original Bug ID# 6396862. The original bug number being used to track this duplicate issue can be found in the State column, in this format: Duplicate/OrigBug#.

Thank you for submitting this bug report. We truly appreciate your assistance in helping us discover and isolate bugs."

So at least they know about it.

Working!!!!

I unziped the itunes installer and created a new user account as admin. Tried installing mobiledevicessupport64 and it would uninstall itself and give an error. I noticed however that it would work for a min while installing. So what I did was waited for the balloon to show up at the bottom that the drive had been installed and canceled the installation of the mobiledevicessupport64 before it had a chance to uninstall itself. Then I went into my main user account and opened mobiledevicessurpport64 again and chose repair while installing. Seems to work fine now.

Here is the fix I found for issues with Vista 64Bit

Install latest version of iTunes. Navigate to C:\Program Files\Common Files\
and delete Apple folder. Then re-install AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi file after extracting it from iTunes64Setup.exe file. This has resolved the issue for me. Let me know if it works for you 🙂

Make sure you navigate to \Program Files and not \Program Files (x86) folder.

OK. I have been reading this disscusion for a few months now and I am confused to death on how to do it. Here are the facts: I have windows vista Home Premium 32-bit. I used to be a standard user but then changed to adminastrator a few months ago. I used to be running itunes 7. It was working properly. until Apple Software update popped up and said a new version of itunes is avalible. it downloaded perfectly but doesn't install correctly and said there was an error. but i still had itunes 7 so I didn't worry about it. Apple software update kept pping up and it annoyed me so badly that I just downloaded it manually from the site and installed it. but the same problem popped up. after a few weeks I downloaded it again and it Installed! Obviously apple fixed the problem. but it said that Apple Mobile device support was an older version and to uninstall it and reinstall itunes. I did that and then it said that apple mobile device support cannot be found and to reinstall itunes. I did reinstalled again and that and the same error popped up. so I uninstalled Apple Software update, Bonjour, Itunes and Quicktime. Then I deleted all the folders that have to do with apple in C:/Program files. (Quicktime, Bonjour, Apple Software updater, and ipod) Then I downlaoded and reinstalled itunes but I keep getting the same error message when I connect my ipod. I made a another adminastrator account and tried to install it ther but the same popped up again! can some one help me? I'll try to understand your discussion.
