I have exactly the same problem. As soon as I downloaded Itunes 8 I couldn't burn discs despite having been able to for the last 3 years on the same computer with the same software so it is clearly a problem with the download. I emailed customer support who replied with an idiots guide to burning a cd and did not address in the slightest the fact it is a problem with the download. If this doesn't work, which obviously it hasn't, the email told me I can phone Itunes support for which I will be charged. Awful customer service.

I finally have a fix after 9 months of not being able to use my laptop with ITunes/IPod due to the program disabling the DVD/CD drives on my Vista laptop. You can try this ... if it does not work for you, you can simply restore the file.
Search for the following file:
C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\AFS.SYS
The fix I found recommended renaming the file as a TXT file extension, but I could not get that to work, so I just deleted it, figuring that if it did anything else detrimental to my operating system after a reboot, I could just restore it out of the recycle bin. Sure enough, getting rid of AFS.SYS restored the DVD/CD drive to MY COMPUTER right away!

The file supposedly allows CD recording functionality with the following programs:
 HP Memories Disc Creator
 Liquid Audio
 Portal Player
 Oak Technology SimpliCD
 Broderbund's Print Shop version 20
so if you try to use any of those on a VISTA Windows system, you might run into a problem with CD burning because VISTA is not compatible.
Hope this helps some of you out there, I know I searched message boards for months, tried many things and nothing worked. I can't remember where I found this (Maybe on a GEAR website?) so again, maybe this will save some others some grief!

I think I have HP Memories Disc Creator on my new HP Vista laptop, although I'm not completely sure. Should I uninstall the program entirely, if so? Or just the driver file you mentioned? Although that might render the program useless.

I'm really think that it's really Apple who dropped the ball on this since so many are reporting problems on both XP and Vista with CD burning.

I just want to thank you for the heads up on that file. I've been having the problem of cd/dvd drives not being seen by windows after itunes install and reboot for about a year and a half. My problem started after installing Print Shop Pro 22. I figured that was the reason but after uninstalling it the problem was still there. I tried to find the file(s) that was causing it but was unable to. So, when I found the file you stated and renamed it, I am able to see my cd/dvd drives without deleting the upper filter entries in the registry. Thanks again, Don

I'm running Itunes on a MacBook Pro and am having the same problem. This is a total joke. When is Mac going to grow up and let us burn songs easily & with the track names & info included. Not being able to burn at all is a total mistake on their part.

Anyone found a solution for a Mac computer with the same problem?

Come on MAC trust your design and open up your softwares.

About to switch, definitely dropping Itunes soon. Anyone know of a good alternative?

Hi all -
I recently replaced my optic drive/DVD drive on my laptop. Now when I open iTunes I get this warning:

*The registry settings used by iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes.*

I've gone through hours and hours of troubleshooting, have backed up my iTunes library (2800+ songs), uninstalled and reinstalled 6 times and trolled all kinds of web pages ... all for no purpose, if what I'm reading here is correct. This is an Apple problem, and not one that I can fix?? That's a huge downer.

Is there a way to revert to an older version of iTunes, do you know? One that still works correctly??
