iPod cuts off in the middle of SOME songs

When playing my iPod, it cuts off in the middle of certain songs, and skips to the next songs. Some songs it won't play at all.

These songs all play in their entirety in iTunes.

Any idea what's causing this/how to fix it?

i JUST recently started having this problem too with my gen 3 iPod
if i play a song via my iMac (iPod plugged in and iTunes reading the song from the iPod) it will play 100%
SOME songs however will cut off anywhere from 5-30 secs before the end when played via headphones or fm transmitter
i personally think its a iTunes v8 issue because up until then i never had a problem

POSSIBLE fix for songs cutting out...
so i was testing my iPod and messing around with my iPod songs that cut out
i knew of 7 songs that cut out (although i had many more)
i plugged my iPod in and the songs played fine in iTunes from the iPod (you need to have it set to manual update in order to do that)
since that time the songs play 100% on the iPod now too
so my possible fix is to play all the songs that cut out in iTunes and it may fix the issue on the iPod
once i come across some of my other songs that don't play 100% on the iPod i will do the test again and see if it fixes them too

I just recently started having this problem and I am slightly irritated.
I have an 80 GB iPod Classic and I have tried resetting it several times.
I am also having a problem with it stopping my movies in the middle (I have been left in the Fire Swamp numerous times and today I didn't even make it to the Cliffs of Insanity... INCONCEIVABLE!!!)

Is there something else we can do or some where else we can go to complain about this. This is not acceptable and I should not have to go through every song that is not playing correctly to manually correct it. If it was 1 or 2 songs then maybe, but most of us have too many to count.

Im having the exact same problem! Its on my 4th gen Nano too, so theyve had ages to sort themselves out!!
Its just one song for me (although I only have 600 on atm- its new!) plays fine on iTunes, the correct start/stop time but it just skips on my iPod. Same thing happens when I play it through my iPod on iTunes. Grrrrrrr
The same song works fine on my Mini, so whats the deal Apple?

Greetings. I just got a new iPod Classic 120 GB to replace my 6-year-old 2G, which finally died on me near the end of 2008. I, too, have experienced the irritating skipping of songs. I'd also gotten a new Mac Mini and updated to 10.5.6 and update ALL of of the software, including iTunes, which is 8.0.2, I think.

The backlight always on "fix" didn't work, either. Then I restored the iPod. First I clicked on "Check for Update" (it told me that I had the latest available), and then I clicked on "Restore." After putting 3300 songs back on the iPod, I went back to one of the songs that the iPod would skip after just :03, and it played fine. However, just as I was beginning this paragraph, after 20 minutes or so of skip-free play, another song cut out prior to its scheduled end.

Just to let people know I also had this problem using an 80GB iPod. Songs cutting out last 3-4 seconds of a song.

Finally decided to ditch iTunes and use Foobar2000 with the foo_pod plug-in (and the Apple Lossless plug in) and.... no problems whatsoever! All tunes play perfectly.

To me at least this proves the problem rests with the current version of iTunes and has nothing to do with the iPod (or the song encoding) at all. Just to double check i tried placing the same encoded 'problem' track onto the iPod using foobar2000 and it played perfectly. This is all 6 months ago and I haven't had a problem (touch wood!) since with this skipping.

Apple - GET YOUR FINGER OUT YOUR * and FIX this problem! We pay enough money for your products - this is very shoddy!

Same problem here - but it's new. I've had my 4G iPod 20GB for a couple years now, and this never used to happen. The first time I heard a song cut off with 10-20 seconds left to go, I grabbed the CD from the rack and reloaded it into iTunes (Ver 8.1). The more I change music around on the iPod (I manually manage music), the more songs there are that cut off before they're done. The iPod progress bar shows that there's more to play, but it jumps to the next song anyway. I'm thinkin' it's a problem with the "new, faster iTunes", because I've done the restore, reload, etc. I'm going to try and find a version 7 in my software discs and take an "old, slower iTunes" approach to see if it eliminates the problem.

well one particular song and a few others that I can't remember, keeps skipping. Majority of my songs plays flawless!!! i downloaded another version of that song on my sister computer and added it to my computer. and both songs (which are the same one) skips at the same spot!!! weird here. I have till the end of the month to decide to deal with the situation or get a refurbished one! i'm not sure what to do. I'm not sure

Hi rwilling84, sorry for the late reply. Yes it's a piece of cake to install Foobar2000. Just make sure you install the appropriate plug ins from the Foobar2000 homepage (it's all very clearly layed out) for ALAC (Apple Lossless ) and AAC (if you need/use them).

Havig said all this, try restoring your iPod again after downloading the latest version of iTunes (v. 8.1.1.10). You'll get a screen coming up saying version 1.3 and underneath that something about bug fixes!!! May help, may not (I am still using Foobar2000 now as am used to it after 6+ months) but worth a try, and I think it solved the problem with another user on another thread here.

Good luck 🙂

- John
