Depends if Apple think its a defect or you have done it. WOrth asking though. I would. It is not supposed to have cracks.

First relax, and take a deep breath.

My daughters White 16GB iPhone that we bought a week after the launch -- cracked. Never dropped, she is very careful with her phone (she really babies it). So we went to the Apple store (Arden Mall - Sacramento) and made an appointment upon arriving. We actually only waited about 45 minutes. Not bad for just "walking in".

The Apple Genius was very polite, energetic and helpful. He looked at the cracks (near the Headphone Jack, the Ring/Silent switch and near the Doc Connector). Which is where the majority of the cracks are happening. He asked a few questions... and he said no problem. We did get the famous "white" box replacement. I asked if this was a refurbished phone, he replied he did not know. We looked over the phone very closely and at this point even if it was a refurbished phone... its better than a cracked one!

So, be polite, nice, and remember that the Apple stores today... are very busy, and the Geniuses deal with issues non-stop all day. Yes it's their job but... you get more by being nice than nasty! Not to imply that you would be rude 🙂

Apple does have the best "customer experience" of any retail store!

I got a crack in my black 16g a couple of days ago. I took it to the apple store and they replaced it with a refurb that works perfectly.

Apple states that it can be new or refurbished.

I know that in our case the phone was new based on the build date. Apple just ended week 36 and the phone my daughter received was built in week 35. I think most people are getting new phones... in 6 months this may be a different story. Getting a refurbished unit in the computer industry --- is very much a standard procedure. Apple is no different than HP, Epson, Dell, etc...

They didn't say it was used but the serial number starts with 5k and out of the box it already had a full battery and 1.5 hours of standby logged so I'm assuming its used.

However, as long as it works and appears new, I guess I'm ok with it. I say I guess because in the back of my mind I really hate the fact that its a refurb but I have no logical reason why.

Doug, the phone I got last night is week 36 and I'm 99% sure its a refurb since it already had standby time logged, a full battery, and 2.0.2 installed (new ones come with 2.0.1).

So I'm not sure the build date can be used, it might be that yours was refurbed on the 35th week.

*Wow... okay so that theory is out the window!*

I checked to see which OS version was loaded on it... and she had 2.0.1. After 20 years in the computer industry... unfortunately this is a normal policy -- refurbished. I fully agree that it stinks!!!! But, in our case it was a lot better to have a "refurbished", "new", "used"... phone vs. the cracked one. Her phone was really bad.

You would think on such a known, manufacturer defect like "cracks", that Apple would break out a new phone. One in a nice new sealed Apple box!!!

Yours must have been bought... and then immediately returned?

Mine was in a white box that was taped shut.

What I know is when the phone is left in heat or gets really hot it will crack because plastic hardens and then eventually cracks after sometime.

I've been thinking about this and I don't think I care if it's refurb. If it is a refurb it's probably built better and with more care. At least that's what I'm telling myself.

The 5K serial number will suck though, if I ever want to sell it on ebay.

Yes... the 5K serial number is the only issue I have as well.

When the next model comes out... off to eBay these phones go. And who knows if the refurbished model will be an issue or not? Only time will tell.

At least you (we) don't have a phone with cracks... 🙂

I've had mine for 2 weeks and still no cracks. A question to all of you with cracked iPhones, how long did it take before cracks appeared? Where is the part most likely to easily crack? We've got not even one Apple Store here, and I believe where I bought this phone (my carrier, Globe) would not replace self-damaging iPhones. If it does crack, do I just live with it?

I bought my phone on July 11 and noticed the crack on Sept 11. I didn't want to take a chance on it spreading so I took it back.
