Charging

Just got the new 4th generation Nano, and when I plug it into my Apple Power Adapter a message appears on the screen that says "Charging is not supported with this accessory". I get the same message when docking in my Bose Sound Dock. What's up? I can only charge with the USB cable that came with the Nano.

This charger issue is ridiculous. I have 6 ipods and four fire-wire wall chargers. No where was it stated that the 4th gen nano would not work with the fire-wire chargers. Now Apple expects me to buy a USB charger just for the covenience of charging my new nano in case I'm not by a PC with my USB cable?!! I can't charge it in either of my JBL speaker systems either. What were they thinking?

Well no where does it state that it will. What the specs say is that it works off USB, which it will.
Your logic that it doesn't say it won't work off Firewire is flawed. Heck, you might as well say, no where does it state it won't charge off a SCSI port connection so therefore we should be shocked when it doesn't.
While it is unfortunate that Apple has discontinued Firewire charging on the Nano line (as well as other iPod lines), this isn't really a new move by Apple. Right now we are just seeing all the same complaints we saw when the 5th generation iPods came out, except rather than charging, it was the lack of Firewire syncing that was moaned about for a lonnggggg time. <sarcasm>Shockingly</sarcasm>, Apple is still in business and still owns the portable audio player market. I doubt that finally dropping the rest of the Firewire support (charging) is going to change that either.

Well I think it would have helped if they informed people not to use older accessories and that they will need to buy new ones to charge. People finding out by surprise isn't good IMO. Some accessories aren't cheapo products, but expensive docks and car kits. That needs to be factored into the overall cost of getting this new generation iPod.

Let's say you were really happy about the lowered price, which I'm sure many were. You thought you were going to spend only $150 plus tax, now it can be up to $450 plus tax(some docks are this high) depending on what accessories you use regularly. Not a bargain anymore.

I also battled with keeping my new ipod charged up. I had 2 accessories that would charge my 2nd gen which of course no longer work with the 4th gen. I am completely dissapointed in Apple for making that change without warning or notice. I ordered the "passPORT" from Scosche Industries, Inc. and just received it yesterday (it was on backorder since early October). IT COMPLETELY FIXES THE PROBLEM! It is an adaptor that works with both my countertop ihome and my FM transmitter car charger. I will mainly leave mine in my car but when i want to I can use in my ihome. THANK YOU SO MUCH SCOCHE!!!!!!!! Shame on you Apple. http://www.scosche.com/products/productID/1667

???
Apple told 3rd pary developers over two years ago that FireWire charging was going away. Very few bothered to do anything and continued to to make their accessories FireWire only. All they needed to do was slip in a few 10 cent resistors and move two wires.
