After 10.5.5 update, Macbook LCD not working but external monitor is good

After installing the update via Software Update to 10.5.5, the Macbook restarted but the LCD is showing up with a white background and nothing else.

Plugging in an external monitor, everything is ok.

Has something in the updated affected the LCD?

I'm having the same problem, the external monitor (Samsung 172x) doesn't work. No signal what so ever. Hopefully Apple will be back with a fix realy soon.

Well, it worked when testing it with a ViewSonic VP201b, both DVI and VGA. Maybe that's from the fresh reboot? Maybe it's only particular manufacturers...

I tried that as well (before I reinstalled the OS and upgraded back to 10.5.4), and that didn't work. The computer, when installed 10.5.5, doesn't recognise that an external monitor is connected.

What happens when you open the Displays preference pane and click "Detect Displays"? Is this problem specific to MacBooks, or does it happen to PowerBooks as well?

Nothing happens - no screen blink, no blue screen, nothing. Just acts like nothing is plugged in.

Don't know if this happens on powerbooks. I only have the problem with my macbook.

If I understand what you are asking correctly, there is just one display listed in the menu drop down.

Can we confirm this problem (internal display works, external display connected via DVI dead) occurs only on Macbooks with 4GB RAM?

(Reminds me of these odd kernel panics when inserting DVDs in the early iterations of Leopard - these also seemed to happen only on Macbooks with 4GB RAM.)

By the way - connecting the display via VGA works for me as well - the other hints (resetting PRAM, connecting when booted up completely) did not.

My issue is the internal Macbook LCD not working but external is.

The internal LCD is very fuzzy and sometimes blank when it is booting up.

The logon screen is flickering - necessitating the use of the external monitor to select the closet but non-native resolution of 1280x768 instead of 1280x800

Because of the fuzzy and blank screen, I can't see what I am doing when trying to reinstall Leopard as nothing shows up on the external monitor.

I have a iMac alu and the desktop went on funny gray lines on my screen and gradually go back to my regular screen after opening some windows. This happened when I used update software, It was updates regarding remote and other stuff dealing with raw format. Anyone else got this problem?

Yep, that's exactly right. Tried using "Detect Displays" in the menu bar and in the prefs pane. I even checked in the System Profiler, and it doesn't detect anything.

I just reinstalled the OS that came on the Install DVD's, and combo updated back to 10.5.4.

I just updated to 10.5.5 -- with my Apple Cinema Display attached and as my sole display -- and the update went just fine.

I'm willing to bet that those who are having problems with external monitors after the update did NOT have the monitor attached while running the update installer. Am I right?
