After 10.5.5 update, Macbook LCD not working but external monitor is good

After installing the update via Software Update to 10.5.5, the Macbook restarted but the LCD is showing up with a white background and nothing else.

Plugging in an external monitor, everything is ok.

Has something in the updated affected the LCD?

Thanks

Macbook, Mac OS X (10.5.4)

Well, for my case, you're wrong.

I had the external monitor connected when installing the update, and then it restarted itself, showed the grey screen with the apple, and then restarted one more time. it showed the grey screen with the apple again, and then it went black, saying that there was no signal.

I then opened my macbook, and saw that the macbook screen had the log in screen.

Basically, if i install 10.5.5, my macbook does not recognise external monitors.

This thread is among the most viewed and replied-to of the 10.5.5 problem threads, yet there seems to be nothing to indicate how to overcome the problem. I have a C2D Macbook late-2007 with a HP2207 which did the same thing (posted to the other thread, also).

My question is whether Apple has responded? Did we all do something wrong in allowing the auto-notification update or is there some other explanation? Nerowolfe suggests filing an ADC bug report. Has anyone done this and received a response or gotten meaningful information from live conversations with Apple Support? Or, are the effected Macbooks stuck at 10.5.4 which is what I reverted to with Time Machine?

I'm having the same problem with my external hp display (connected via mini-dvi). I contacted hp support, but am waiting for a response. As I recall, when I installed the OS X 10.5.5 update, I also installed a driver update for my hp printer - but nothing was available for other external devices.

I'm hopeful that either hp or apple addresses this soon, as I have had no luck restoring functionality with any other method.

try a this:

a) force shutdown - hold the power button for 5 seconds to kill the machine
b) wait a minute
c) boot up by holding "Command-Control-Power" simultaneously until hearing a beep - release immediately
d) if it doesn't work, repeat and/or repeat after zapping the PRAM
e) if it still doesn't work, repeat again

this worked for me so i can get back to work, but restarting normally reproduced the black screen and i have often had to repeat the above process to get my monitor back on, so i will wait for Apple to release a fix before not having to worry about this issue.

Hi - thanks for your help but still no luck

I've come to the conclusion that it is a driver software issue. My Macbook has the LCD as "Display" whereas other Macbooks have "Color LCD" as the name.

I've resigned myself to using the macbook at less than optimal resolution until the next update or when i have time to viist an Apple store (which I probably won't cause the warranty has expired)

Hi there!
I'm having the same problem here, my TFT Monitor connected with the MacBook just won't work. This is what I did so far:
1. I connected the Acer-notebook of a friend to my Medion 19" TFT, worked perfectly fine.
2. Took my MacBook to the local iStore, tested the MacBook (attached Mini-Dvi-Adapter) with an Apple Display. Worked perfectly fine as well.
3. Called Medion Hotline (0,12€/Min), they had no clue.

Now the scary thing: _it used to work 3 or 4 months ago_. So I think it is the 10.5.5 Update.

After 10.5.5 update, Macbook LCD not working but external monitor is good
