Aperture and Nikon D700: Can not review thumbnail while importing

Now that 10.5.5 supports Nikon D700 RAW files, there is a problem with Aperture 2.1.1.

When you select the D700 when importing, the RAW file thumbnails are blank. You cannot see what you shot. You'll have to import it first. This problem also exist if you shoot RAW+JPEG fine, RAW+JPEG normal, RAW+JPEG basic. You will however be able to see the thumbnail if you shoot JPEG or TIFF only.

iPhoto does not seem to have this problem.

Does anyone have the same problem? Any work around?

Quad 3.0, MBP 15, Mac OS X (10.5.5), Nikon D700, D200, D70

Doing a little googling, it appears that Nikon have left the option out of the D700. They must assume that anyone using a Mac will have a CF card reader. It would appear the problem is the same as with the earlier cameras if the Mass Storage was not selected. In the D200 and D300 without setting to Mass Storage, this problem was present. I don't think it is an Aperture bug, therefore.

Btw, I can highly recommend the Lexar FW 800 CF reader, and have tested CF cards used in a D700 with it.

Bummer that there is no option in the camera, however.

I am having the EXACT same problem. I have the new Olympus E520— which like the D700, was not suported by Aperutre until the recent RAW 2.2 upgrade. Like you, I cannot see thumbnails of my RAW images on my memory card when using the import function in Aperture.

As you have said: Everything is fine AFTER I import, but prior to import, when reading off my card, only empty dotted boxes.

Please let me know if you find a solution to this problem. Or if there is any other information I can give you. It's not just a Nikon problem or a D700 problem. After reading your post my guess is that it's a problem with newer, previously unsupported cameras.

It's no good not being able to see which images I'm importing until after they're imported.

Clem, thanks very much. Unfortunately, that's not working for me. I spoke with an E-3 user who was having the same problem— prior to the RAW 2.2 update.

I guess that's what I get for going with Oly rather then Nik-Canon. Funny though, Apple (a niche company with a small slice of the market) is ignoring the needs of Oly cameras (a niche company with a small slice of the market.)

Anyhow, thanks again

I have a D300 and this was not a problem prior to the 2.1.1 release of Aperture. Selecting the Mass Storage option fixes it. It looks Nikon have decided that the Mass Storage option is not necessary anymore and I would agree it is old technology. Aperture has introduced a bug and there have been plenty of people complaining about it so hopefully it will be fixed in another update.

I do not understand why you say this is a bug with Aperture? Whether Mass Storage is selected on a D300, or not, has a general impact whether running 10.4 or 10.5. When not using Mass Storage selection, and directly connecting the camera, there is no visible mounting of the camera, as would be expected. This has various degrees of impact depending upon the application you plan to use to download the images directly from the camera. The impact is more pronounced with RAW images, and appears to not as often be of consequence when only shooting JPEGS.

You will note that the impact of this setting on the D300 is not limited to Macs, only.

How are you certain it operated correctly before? My D200 would always mount, and then my D300 would not. Found the setting in the camera was different on the D300. The issue with the camera not mounting as a disk drive is separate and outside of Aperture. I found the issue on my iBook G4 using Graphic Converter when I was not at my Mac with Aperture, traveling and trying to download images to the iBook. The camera not being seen as a disk drive is key to this behavior when shooting in RAW, and not seeing previews.

I do not accept that the issue only arose in A 2.1.1.

The lack of the Mass Storage setting on the D700 brings up the likelihood that Firmware updates to the D700 can only be accomplished using a CF card reader to load the firmware on the memory card for use in the camera.

On the D300 FIrmware update, I think you will find that is required to select Mass Storage if you wish to update using a direct connection to the camera.

The Mass Storage option allows the camera to look like a disk so that the OS can mount it as a file system. This is why it shows up in finder and has an eject button. When using MTP/PTP the camera is not treated like a hard drive, it is not mounted and you will not see it in the finder as a disk. This is the more modern way to connect the device, you don't have to eject the camera before disconnection or switching off. It is not being accessed as a file system and therefore not being accessed via the file system cache so there is no need to sync it and no risk to data corruption.

If Aperture can read the raw files on the camera to import them when the camera is set to MTP/PTP (which it can) then it should be able to display thumbnails.

Hope this helps....
