Aperture and Nikon D700: Can not review thumbnail while importing

Now that 10.5.5 supports Nikon D700 RAW files, there is a problem with Aperture 2.1.1.

When you select the D700 when importing, the RAW file thumbnails are blank. You cannot see what you shot. You'll have to import it first. This problem also exist if you shoot RAW+JPEG fine, RAW+JPEG normal, RAW+JPEG basic. You will however be able to see the thumbnail if you shoot JPEG or TIFF only.

iPhoto does not seem to have this problem.

Does anyone have the same problem? Any work around?

Quad 3.0, MBP 15, Mac OS X (10.5.5), Nikon D700, D200, D70

Very enlightening observations -- thanks. I had connected the issue of not mounting with the preview issue, which apparently is not the case.

I did not bother to test A2.1, but was able to easily test A 1.5.6 -- when not using the Mass Storage settings (on my D200 which was more convenient at the time, Aperture could still provide the Previews in the download window, but not using A 2.1.1.

The Nikon D3 has the same problem.

I, too, feel it is an Aperture bug. Whether the camera appears as a "drive" or as a "camera", either way Aperture should show previews.

If it is technically impossible for Aperture to process RAW images and show previews, then an appropriate message should appear instead of empty outlined black boxes.

Having to take the memory cards out of the camera and put them into an external reader is just an extra step that some of us don't want to do. That's one of the reasons we buy the big capacity memory cards.

Did anyone solve this?

I've just been looking into it myself and have tried a few things:

Camera = Nikon D3
Image type = RAW or RAW+JPG
Aperture version = 2.1.2

I get the same issue - no pre-import previews showing when using MTP/PTP transfer mode

My findings:
1) It does work if the camera set to Mass storage

2) It works in iPhoto?! with the camera set to MTP/PTP. Same images etc..., just switched apps and iPhoto showed them straight away?

This is has therefore got to be an Aperture issue.

What gives? - please fix it Apple

My preview worked just fine using my D700 with Aperture 2.1.1 (Shooting RAW+JPG) - I noticed when I updated to Aperture 2.1.2... poof.... No more preview!

This might not be the norm - just reporting my experience.

I was very happy to see this thread - My main concern was that I accidentally hosed my D700.

Apple - any thoughts? 😉
