MacBook won't boot up -- Loud Beep Noise

I just started encountering this problem today. My MacBook worked just fine yesterday, and then when I went to turn it on today, it refuses to boot up. I get the startup sound, and then after that just a loud noise that goes "BEEP, BEEP, BEEP......BEEP, BEEP, BEEP..." on and on. Does anyone know what could be causing this, and how to fix it? Thanks in advance.

MacBook (Black), Mac OS X (10.5.4)

UPDATE: After testing this for a while, I have found that this issue is only happening when I try to start the computer up without having it plugged in. The battery level indicator on the bottom shows 4 green lights, so it's not that the battery is dead. However, if I turn the computer off after getting this problem and leave it off for a minute or so, then plug it into the wall, it boots up without a problem. Could it just be that my battery is faulty and it is showing that it has plenty of power when in fact it has none?

Three beeps at startup means you have either bad RAM or bad memory slots. You might do a hardware test:

Insert your OS X Installer Disc One that came with the computer into the optical drive. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the "D" key until the diagnostic screen appears. Run extended diagnostics. You may need to do this several times over several hours in order to be sure any errors are detected. If errors are detected note down the error code returned so you can report it to AppleCare or the service tech at your local Apple repair center.

I thought I would give an update to my situation now that it's been resolved. Initially, the computer would get stuck on the gray screen and give the three beeps randomly. Sometimes it would boot up like normal, and other times it wouldn't. It seemed like more often than not, it would boot up fine when it was plugged into the wall instead of just running on battery power. This problem cropped up out of nowhere, because the computer had not been dropped or banged or jolted at all.

I took it to my local Apple store, where it failed to demonstrate my error for the Genius (of course lol). He did confirm that the symptoms I was describing indicated problems with the RAM or RAM slots, but since the error wasn't occuring, he really couldn't help me. He did re-seat the RAM cards for me just to be sure, and sent me on my way telling me to download all the latest software updates, and to bring it back if the error occurred again.

As soon as I get home, the error happens! I made an appointment to go back to the Apple store the next day, where it did actually demonstrate the error for the Genius. She said that I would need to check it in to be repaired and she disappeared to the back to quote me a repair time. When she came back, she instead offered to exchange the computer for me, and since I had no important data on the computer, and I backed up what I did have, I accepted. Everything has been working fine ever since.

I had the same issue today and called the Mac support team, after trying out different suggestions (downloading firmware etc) the guy told me to set up a meeting at the apple store, take my ,macbook, cords and the box from when I bought it and that they'll just replace it with a new one. My meeting is on Thursday so Im hoping it goes as smoothly as he made it sound. I just find this so strange because one minute I'm online and the next my macbook freezes, etc. Such a disappointment considering I had my iBook G4 for 3 yrs with no major incidents and here I've only had this for 3 weeks.

Hi,
the same problem is happening with me. I haven't switched off my MB for 3 days. and now when I switched it off and it wont starting up again. Having the same symptom. Gray screen with continuous beep. The start-up chime is coming but no video.

trying to reset SCM as well as PRAM but in vain. try to boot up with and without AC adapter but same result.

Is exchanging the MB is only option?? Any other solution???

I'm not getting the loud beep noise, but I am having the other issues as most of you. I have to plug in my AC power adapter for my MacBook to boot up. If I shut it down completely and remove my AC power, I try to turn it back on (this time running on battery power), it won't start up at all. The battery pack shows 4-5 green dots. I upgraded my ram a couple weeks ago from 2GB to 4GB, and I made sure it wasn't my ram because I put back the 2GB that came with my MacBook and I'm still having the same issue with booting up.

Hi. I'm having the same beeping problem too, on my MBP (early '08).

It started when my boot camp Windows XP crashed into the blue screen with some IRQ error. Upon rebooting (without pressing alt/option; and default boot drive is Mac OS partition), the beeps start to happen.

Turning the computer off for a few minutes and booting it back up got me into Mac OS X. Then I tried to boot Windows through VMWare Fusion, but it doesn't work - my screen stays black with no Windows loading screen.

In addition to that, Mac OS X itself keeps crashing few minutes after logging in at startup - gray screen with multilingual instructions to press and hold the power button to restart.

So I removed my Windows boot camp and restored back to the single Mac OS partition. But the beeping still occurs at startup, and when I finally managed to log into Mac OS, it crashes just the same after awhile.

Next I ran the Apple Hardware Test using the Mac OS CD and got this error code:
4MEM/9/40000000:c6f4054

Please help...

Okay... my mac is working fine now, after dozens of boot attempts and OS crashes. I noticed that Spotlight was indexing just before my OS crashes. I'm guessing that there's some 'bad stuff' in my previous Windows installation that got indexed and which caused the crash.
But now indexing is done and my OS doesn't crash, plus no more loud beeps at startup.

Still wondering what could've caused this and I'm now unsure of whether to reinstall my Win XP Pro in boot camp or XP Home or Vista instead. Any ideas?
