Yeah . . wow . . it's pathetic how they've abandoned TDM users!
I've been working professionally with Logic on Digi hardware for 12 years,
and have had nothing but problems the last year.
Can't go Native because of too many open projects and lack of backwards comp,
but it sure is tempting sometimes. .
So, out of all Logic users, we are the only ones still using TDM? 🙂
Sadly - I'm another emigre ..... after 12 years I HAVE jumped ship successfully. Moved over from TDM to Naked (... sorry Native ..... although that's how it felt at first!)
I compose and produce large 5.1 movie scores ("large" as in real orchestras /real choirs /sampler and midi work) My guess is I must be one of Logics most heavy duty users. Sadly I did find Apple had no interest in helping me when I thought about the move over.
So when I did make the move from Protools hardware this year, it was not without fear and trepidation, but was offered a film with budget for orchestra sessions and ancillary musicians that I would then produce in my own studio together with my usual army of samples and midi work.
I talked to both Peter Gabriel and Thomas Newman's people ..... Real World Studio being close to my county neighbours. They all use Logic but NONE of them do anything "professional" without either exporting everything into Protools or using Logic "just for the midi work"
Nobody "professional" that I've discussed this with (- & WOULD LOVE TO BE CONTRADICTED NOW BY ANYONE ELSE USING LOGIC NAKED ON BIG PROJECTS) will own up to using JUST Logic 8 and a big Mac to do EVERYTHING ........ WHY?
It DOES work!
However, I'll be working in a studio which will record my orchestra sessions on Protools - partly I guess because of the economic factors of the desperate financial investment .... studios really do have to find a way to reap back investment and it's getting very difficult.
A large studio already has huge investment invested in hardware and they need to be able to charge their clients. Quite understandably.
There is though a big "BUT" ... maybe one issue ..... and this is the difference in sample accuracy and phase recording on Protools over Logic. I've been told to keep my orchestra recordings (which I will take all mic positions away on hard drives and mix on Logic in my studio) "live" ..... ie. Not do submixes in Logic and then re-import.
SO A QUESTION TO THIS FORUM. Does anyone have any frontline experience of (aside from coping with latency and plugin quality issues) the difference in phase/sample accuracy etc ("quality") between recording and mixing within Protools over doing the same in Logic Naked?
