Apple is going to have to do something about the scratching

I think Apple is going to have a major problem on their hands when enough of these are sold. They chose a poor material for the Nano and will probably have to change it in the manufacturing process soon. The Nano is a beautiful product and should not have to be covered up just to avoid the slightist scratches from fingernails etc. I bet the Apple stores will soon be required to replace their floor models everyday to keep from turning off the customers. I have treated mine like a king and it already has a few scratches etc. They could at least use the best Lucite they used in the previous models. Only time will tell.

Apple have taken the worst line they could have in making a response. They have chosen just to ignore all these complaints even though the scratching is a massive issue that has been covered in local, national and international news both on the web and in newspapers and magazines.

Their response, and all the Nanos out there, are very very bad publicity.

Very true, we are. We are also free to show them to anyone thinking of purchasing one. I think this one is going to go into the same category as the Cube. I have a feeling this issue will end up with much wider media exposure and more responses from Apple. If Steve was really carrying his around in his pockets like that I guess he's got a lot of scratches too. Guess his employees forgot to tell him to get a case before he used it.

Dear Mr David Hard,

Calling people names that have legitimate concerns over their apple product does not reflect the MacUserBase very well. If anything, it furthers the stereotype of the elitist attitude MacHeads tend to have.

The macworld article is typical, and basically telling their customers to fark off.

I love my nano, but I guarantee it was my first and last purchase from apple.

There is no freaking way on earth this thing should scratch so easily from a single wipe from a tshirt or whatever.

Ingoring the complaints of thousands is whats called IGNORANT and CLOSED-MINDED.

Exactly.

I showed my Nano to anyone willing to look when I first got it. OMG OMG were the typical responses.

Now, they're like "*** is that?"

All I can do is shrug. These people know me and how I am with my possesions. Especially the electronic thing I own. I covet them like a momma bald eagle protecting her children.

If I were a 16 year old pimply faced teenager, I might realize I didn't treat it right.

As it is, I'm a 33 year old IT director who knows a thing or two about technology and how to handle such pieces of equipment.

Which should tell you that its a pretty serious problem.

You think people are coming out of the woodwork just to rail on Apple?

No! These are legit concerns from paying consumers.

In less than a half hour, my nano was scratched. Considerably scratched. PSP's dont scratch like this, and thats plastic. ****.. my Cell phone that goes in and out of my pocket countless times a day doesnt have a scratch on the outer screen.

Put down your die hard loyalty for a moment and have some apathy for a very REAL problem.

For what its worth I saw a demo Nano in John Lewis in the UK over the weekend. The black was TOTALLY trashed, although the white was slightly better it was still battered.

I have owned a EMP-400 for the past 18 months and neither the plastic or metal [with is lacquered] has a scratch on it. The idea a premium player scratches if you touch it with rough skin is ludicrous.

I am personally not going to buy a Nano until this is resolved. The idiots in charge at Apple can deny this all they want but at the end of the day we have the final say as consumers.

Apple should realise [after all they have made a living out of it] that style and appearance is VERY important, neglecting this issue presents a very bad picture of their product.

Sort your sh1t out Apple

Dear David,
I don't think anybody I've read is out of control. I'd judge the tone at dissatisfied. You can add my name to the list of dissatisfied customers. Like everyone else I've talked to (10+ friends/acquaintances with the nano) my nano scratched on 100% cotton. If I can't use a cotton cloth to clean my ipod, where is the warning not to do that? Where is the special cloth that should be included with the ipod to clean it? These things do get dirty you know. Am I supposed to just leave years worth of fingerprints to accumulate on the case?
I can't believe that any of this is news to Apple. Either they knew about the scratching issues and brought an inferior product out anyway, or somewhere between design and manufacture, something has changed. I know of no one who has an earlier ipod gen 1-4 that has had issues as severe as the nano. We are not talking about throw-away money here. Apple needs to do something- admit that there is a problem, fix the problem, then replace all the damaged nanos. End of story.

At least they did finally admit a problem with the LCD screens. But wait, lots of posters here attacked the people whose LCDs cracked and all said it was their fault...wonder if they'll apologize here or in the thread on screens cracking?

And if the 4th generation scratches as easily I'm glad I have a 3G. The article also said they recommended immediately putting it in a case to protect it...too bad they didn't have one when they release it for sale. But here's a thought: why don't they just sell it in a case to begin with to protect it.

This reminds me of people who bought sofas and immediately covered them with clear plastic.

My iPod nano screen broke exactly like in this picture: http://media.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/photo/2005/09/27/PH2005092701931. jpg
except it only has a black dot in the bottom left corner. I looked up this problem and there seems to be a big ruckus about all this. I asked iPod (on their support site) to replace my iPod already once before and have done so again. Hopefully, they send me an iPod that has fixed these broken screen issues.
