I just bought iPod touch 16GB 2nd gen and I'm having trouble with using some WiFi networks. I can use unsecured networks, but I am unable to use ANY protected networks. Whenever I try, it asks me for the password, I enter it and then it gives me 'unable to connect' error. I try the same thing with my laptop and it works like a charm. I checked support part of apple.com website but I couldn't find any useful information. Anyone knows a solution for this? Should I contact apple?

These are good suggestions of course -- but I've tried them all. My 2G Touch consistently connects with unsecured networks but then can't get to the internet: No IP address, no subnet mask, etc. and "renew lease" changes nothing. I'm hopeful that, as has been suggested here, it's a software problem that Apple will eventually correct.
JMin,
You should really post this as a new topic.
Since you can connect with unsecured networks, your touch is fine - hardware and software wise. Generally when you can't connect to a secured network, the problem is either with you putting in the password wrong (WPA/WPA2) or not using the hex key for WEP, or the network is set up incorrectly making routine connections difficult (SSID off, DHCP off, MAC address filtering on).
So, please start a new post and detail how your network is setup and I will try and help you figure this out.

Bcal125,
Welcome to Apple Discussions
Please post a new thread with some details about your problem. Each WiFi problem is rather unique so you need to supply some details about the network you are trying to connect to, what your touch is doing, etc.

AT LAST. My cable connection went out yesterday, and when it returned my ipod wouldn't connect for anything. I fought with this for hours and finally found the solution.
Ok, so here's what DIDN'T work:
* resetting the router
* erasing and resetting the ipod
* turning wifi on and off
* changing encryption
* changing network keys
* updating router firmware
...and about a million other things. And it makes sense none of those would work, because this is a network connection settings problem. So fear not, your ipod is NOT broken.
There is an ipod app out there called Ping Lite, and this was useful in testing my theory (it won't help you connect, but is useful for testing). I knew that the internet was working because I could ping 4.2.2.2. What's happening is a DNS problem--the ipod is somehow getting a bad DNS from the DHCP server.
So! The solution was as simple as going to going into your wifi settings in the ipod, and changing the DNS to 4.2.2.2, 4.2.2.3. (Both of those, with the comma). Those are known good DNS and everything connects fine now.
Hope this helps some people.

Hi, I may be able to help. I got my 2nd gen ipod today and spend 2 hours of frustration trying to get internet access to work. Unsecuring the network, removing mac filtering etc etc the ipod connected to the network but could not access the internet.
In the end I worked out that there is a bug in 2.2.1 (5H11A) which screws up DHCP.
Setting a static ip address resolved. (I thought Macs's 'just worked').
ps perhaps someone can help me..... I want to start a new post here yet it can't see any 'new post' icon... is it a hidden mac thing that stops us pc users from posting? thanks

Go to the top of the forum you want to post in, such as this one, "Connecting iPod touch to Mac", and at the top left click on "Post New Topic".
I don't believe there is any such bug in 2.2.1 with DHCP, at least not that I've found with a Touch or an iPhone.

thx - I eventually worked out that the top 3 items were not stickies and were actually sub categories doh!
Anyway back to wireless - I have several pcs/laptops and all use DHCP with my router. All I know is the ipod flatly refused to use teh ip address/dns allocated by by router and kept defaulting to some obscure one. Switching the ipod to a static address cured my wireless woes.

bikeman,
As deggie said, this should have been posted as a new topic. I believe your specific issue is with the range of address that you have set in your router. Normally you would set something like 192.168.1.2 to 192.168.1.100 for a range of IP addresses. If yours is a narrower range or you have lots of devices on your network (wired or wireless) you need to widen this range.

have u tried unplugging your modem and router then replugging them back in...let the connection start up then try the wifi. it worked for me...i couldnt get safari, the app store, or my email to work...i even restored the settings, saw youtube vids, and nothing.
until i restarted my modem and router...worth a try

I got the touch today and had the same problems as everybody else and tried everything I could find on every forum but nothing worked until this.
I hope it works for you.
After I disabled the WEP security on my linksys router and succesfully connected my ipod to the internet I noticed the ipod changed it's network settings. I switched the ipod from DHCP to Static, retaining the new settings and re-enabled my network security. Everything worked fine.
Good luck and thanks for all the suggestions, they eventually led me to a cure.

So i just got a replacement ipod touch because my last ones battery was defective. This new one worked fine for a week, then suddenly it stopped detecting wifi signals completely. I tried restoring it and it changed nothing. Why wont it find wifi signals anymore? i mean thats the main reason i got it in the first place. What should i do to fix it??
Again, the issue is as plain as the ipod will not detect wifi signals anywhere even though there is wifi available

problem: touch cannot connect to WPA/WPA2 network with 128bit encryption.
my solution: the password had 12 ascii characters in it. my router has an option for a "guest" password, so I set that to an 8 ascii char password.
the fact that this works seems to imply a limitation in the number of password characters that the touch will process. I have not experimented with the limits of this, so I may be off base. but nowhere in this thread have I seen anyone mentioning the password length as significant. I'm just sayin'.

The secured networks should be set to WPA/WPA2 encryption for the IPT to work with the network.
I've exactly this same problem. I'm pretty conversant with all the required protocol etc, but just can't figure this out.
