I just bought iPod touch 16GB 2nd gen and I'm having trouble with using some WiFi networks. I can use unsecured networks, but I am unable to use ANY protected networks. Whenever I try, it asks me for the password, I enter it and then it gives me 'unable to connect' error. I try the same thing with my laptop and it works like a charm. I checked support part of apple.com website but I couldn't find any useful information. Anyone knows a solution for this? Should I contact apple?

I just called apple care and they informed me that 64 bit encryption will NOT work with the 2nd gen 2.2 software. Only 128 bit encryption is compatible with the new ipod touch. I have my doubts. has anyone else had any luck using 128 bit with the 2.2 software?
cframes/h1044,
If you can use WPA or WPA2 encryption with your router, use that. It's easier to implement and more secure.
As to your connection or inability to use the internet...
Go to Settings and open WiFi, tap on the blue arrow next to the network name and look at the settings. You should see your IP, the router's IP, the subnet mask, and the DNS settings. If you don't, try these in order:
Turn Wifi off, wait a few seconds and turn it back on.
Go back into the network information and tap DHCP, scroll down and tap Renew Lease.
If you are still having problems, Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
If still not working, write back.

I'm having the same problem with my ipod gen 2 software 2.2 connecting to my 128 bit wep key router. Is there a specific format for entering the hex digits in to the ipod. Dollar sign or no dollar sign? All caps or no caps? hex numbers separated by a colon? I'm just reaching for straws. I've beat my head against the wall working on this. I can connect to wpa2 routers no problem and my older belkin "b" router will connect with out wep but the moment i turn on wep the connection dies. I have not seen any definitive comments about the format of the string. Could this be an issue?
I have a 16G 2GEN Touch running ver. 2.2.
Well I see lots of problems here. How bout this one? I can connect fine to my home network.
But when I am out I cannot connect to open signals. I actually get a strong signal indicator.
I get an ip address and subnet mask but no router numbers appear. So when I go into Safari I get
"Cannot connect to the internet". Anyone have this problem? BTW this is my second Touch, I had worse problems with my first one and had exchanged it for this one. Also my sons 1GEN 8GB Touch connects fine to outside open networks.

Just one suggestion for everyone - I read this somewhere else.
Please ensure that if you are trying to connect to a hidden network (ie: a secure SSID) that you type the name of your network exactly using the correct capitals and lower case lettering. I couldn't get mine to connect at all until I realised that my network name does start with a CAPITAL letter (the rest in lowercase).
Once I entered it that way, everything was fine.

Usually on open networks, you can try one of two things.
- Go into Settings and turn off WiFi. Wait a bit and turn it back on. Or
- Go into Settings > WiFi and and click on the blue arrow to the right of the name. Tap on DHCP, scroll down, Tap on renew lease.
Just be aware that some wireless networks require that you log into their systems via a web page (Paneras being a good example of this). Usually trying to go to any bookmarked page will pop up the host's website and allow you to log in.

unfortunatley this is a software problem that apple needs to fix not you, who knows when the next patch will come out for this, its been a huge problem for many people, i have this exact same problem as well all we can do is sit and wait.
I have the problem of I can't get my 2nd geneation Ipod touch to connect to open WiFi connections. It acts like it is but I can't get Safari or any updates and it tells me it failed or no internet connection. However any secure network that I have the code for it works great ie at home, work or friends house. What gives? Yes I have the 2.2 version currently. This is my first Apple product and I can't believe the amount of people with this issue or the exact opposite (no secure networks, only open ones). I would expect by now they would have a fix for this! If somebody figures it out let me know. Thanks LVJeff
With open networks, there are two a few things to try:
Turn WiFi off and turn it back on (that refreshes the connection). or...
If it appears to have connected, go to Settings > WiFi and then tap on the blue arrow to the right of the network name. When everything is working right, you should see your device IP address, the subnet mask, the router IP address, and the DNS address. If any of this is missing, tap DHCP and scroll down. Tap Renew Lease.
The final thing to try is to open Safari and click on a bookmarked link. Often the network wants you to "log in" even through it is an open network. This should popup a web page for you to "log in". (example - Pannera Bread)
BTW, this is not an "Apple Problem" but a real lack of understanding out there about how wireless networks operate. Laptop users have the same problems. People who install wireless modems have problems setting them up correctly. I can walk around my neighborhood with my Touch and 50% of the wireless networks are completely unsecured. I guess it is just human nature to blame the device and not the operator.

Well I think I've figured it out. That is, if you have a WEP network security. When you put in your password, instead of putting in the password, put in the wep security code. It worked for me, it should work for you.
When you say WEP securtiy code do you mean the hexadecimal numbers that are generated? If you are entering the hexadecimal numbers into the iPod, how is entry formatted?
For example...
aa:bb:cc:... lower case with a colon separating each hex number.
AA:BB:CC:... Caps with a colon separating.
aabbcc... lower case with nothing separating the numbers
AABBCC... Caps with nothing separating.
$AABBCC... Is there a special charater that tells the iPod what you are
$AA:BB:CC:... entering is a hexadecimal number? For example a $
I just amazed that Apple will not clarify what the iPod needs in order to operate on a WEP secured network.

Same deal -- I connect fine to my home network (which is WPA encrypted) with my 2nd Generation iPod Touch, but cannot connect to an unencrypted network in a different location. My iPod Touch 1st Generation connects to both. I swapped out my 2nd Generation unit for a different one; same problem. Has anyone figured out a solution? Thanks....
Your touch doesn't connect to an open network or once you are connected, you can't check e-mail, surf the web, go to the iTunes store?
If it is the latter, and I suspect it is, most commercial open networks have an interim log in page that you need to go to. Open Safari, tap on bookmarks, tap on one of your bookmarks. You should get the open network's log on page. Give them what they are asking for (if anything) and tap connect.
I didn't run into one open network last week while traveling that didn't use this system.

It "connects" to the network, but I get an error message at the browser (and YouTube & other apps that need to be connected) that says I'm not connected to the internet.
I should also mention that the network I'm describing is an unsecured home network run by a neighbor; this isn't an open public network of any kind, just an ordinary unsecured home network.

When you think you are logged on to your neighbor's network (is this OK with him/her?), go to Settings > WiFi and tap on the blue > next to the network name. Do you have an IP address of 192.168.x.x or is it 169.x.x.x?
If it is the later, your neighbor may have set his network up with DHCP off and MAC address filtering on. You may be able to log on, but you are not going to get what you need to actually connect to anything. His/her network only appears open because it is not running encryption.
