Mini DisplayPort to HDMI

Are they going to make this adapter? I know some TVs coming out do not have VGA or DVI, only HDMI now, so is apple going to make this adapter or will we need to buy the displayport adapter to DVI and then a DVI to HDMI adapter as well?

This might be a dumb question - but can bluetooth be incorporated in anyway?
I know TVs (that I know of) don't have Bluetooth - but what if, for example, you have a PS3 that is hooked up to the TV (via HDMI) could you use the PS3 in someway to capture the media content (both video and audio) and then broadcast that to the TV? Or some other workaround that would use bluetooth?

I don't know enough about bluetooth to know if it can do both video and audio.

However - all this would be easily resolved if they would make a HDMI adaptor (from the mini display port). Hopefully that comes out soon.

I too would like to hook up to a HD TV and don't want to have to run an audio cable as well as a video cable, because it is more than just two cables - its a minimum of what 3 adaptors PLUS the cables...what a mess. For Apple who is always so streamline and sleek, having cords running all over the place doesn't really look at that great. I'm for simplicity, not complexity. PCs have HDMI outputs. When I ordered my macbook I was told (erroneously by apple CS) that you could take both audio and video out to a TV via the display port. HAD I known I couldn't I may have gone with a PC...or at least have known ahead of time rather than be immediately disappointed with a brand new laptop.

Lets hope for a new adaptor soon!

Hi BigSkyBorn,

Welcome to Apple Discussions!

I suppose bluetooth could be used, but I wouldn't recommend it. At least in my experience, it is not 100% reliable --- a hard-wired connection would be the preferred way to go.

With regard to mini DisplayPort audio capabilities, from what I've read no one has definitively tested whether this is possible (since no mini DP to HDMI cables are available), but I read a blog (Daniel Eran Dilger's) that clearly states that mini DP does not carry audio. This is despite the fact that the VESA standard for DP does include audio.

I think it might be possible that third party manufacturers will produce, in addition to a mini DP to HDMI cable, one with an additional integrated line that will plug into the audio out of the MacBook; not a particularly elegant solution, but it might be okay.

It is disappointing that Apple did not make this easy. Could it be that they want to protect sales of AppleTV with its HDMI output?

Thanks for the greetings!
This is my first Mac - so we will see how it goes.
I'm excited but a little disappointed with the output options.

Ahhh..and that makes perfect sense. If the output doesn't have both audio/video than that could explain why there is no HDMI option.

Thanks for the answer. Time will tell. For now I'll take any option over no option.

Thanks again.

[sigh]...still waiting for a Mini DP to HDMI option. I never anticipated this would be so difficult and really don't understand why Apple Engineers chose not to design this latest Macbook iteration with a regular DisplayPort (size difference in ports is negligible).

Even if Mini DP didn't support audio (which is truly a shame and makes the decision to switch to mini DP even more nonsensical from a customer point of view so Apple, PLEASE TELL ME IT AIN'T SO), most folks I'm sure would still rather not purchase two adapters. I don't I sure don't, and not even so much from a economical point of view but from a 'this is ********, why do I have a fat DVI connection/adapter in this menagerie of cables' point of view.

HDMI to DVI cords/adapters also don't support audio but they are hugely popular for the same reason this adapter would be popular: many people don't have DVI nor the super obscure displayport (or mini derivative) on their HDTVs.
