Mini DisplayPort to HDMI

Are they going to make this adapter? I know some TVs coming out do not have VGA or DVI, only HDMI now, so is apple going to make this adapter or will we need to buy the displayport adapter to DVI and then a DVI to HDMI adapter as well?

****!

For me it isnt working. When i put in my USB to DVI adapter (www.displaylink.com) then i got my TV detected (with 1152x720 resolution).

But not when i connect it via Mini DP -> DVI -> DVI to HDMI cable or Mini DP -> DVI -> HDMI Adapter -> HDMI Cable it is not working for me!
I have the Panasonic TH-37PV7F

I have to add my voice to how absolutely ridiculous this is. I have an LCD with BOTH HDMI AND Displayport- and instead of the obvious solution of having 1 cable, be it mini-displayport to display port, or displayport to HDMI, carrying both video and audio, I need a frikkin adapter (which is bulky and unsightly), a 2nd DVI-DVI cable, and ANOTHER cable for the audio. Why? Whats the point of such a tiny mini-display port, if it has to be hooked up to a huge honking adapter which has to be positioned just right so that it does not put too much pressure on the connection and damage the cable?

What a waste of technology. Get with the times apple. How tough could it be to make these cables? Howcome my sister can simply attach her $600 laptop to any modern LCD/Plasma with a single hdmi cable, and I'm stuck jumping through such hoops with a laptop that costs more than twice as much, as which is supposed to be easy to use and user-friendly?

You may be on to something.
However I was browsing some other information and it seemed like it was saying something about the audio that comes from the mac (or any PC) is not digital and these boxes don’t convert the audio to digital which is what the HDMI uses. I think there are boxes out there that do that but they are costly ($300). Hence – this could be why this is an “issue” not because no one wants to make an adaptor, but because you are dealing with different types of data sources. Probably why some PCs have the HDMI output built in – because adaptors don’t work without converting the signal.

I think looking for a converter box is probably the solution, rather than an adaptor. I don’t know enough about audio and video types of data transmission however to know what I need to look for to make sure it is something that can indeed convert the audio and video to HDMI.

I too have the same issue where I can’t simply hook up the audio to a RCA jack on the TV and the HDMI portion to the TV because they are two different functions on my TV.

I don't know enough about sling boxes - but would that be an option?

Its sounds like it would work to me - but like I said I thought I read something someplace that it didn't. I wish I could find that thread again so I could reread it. I too would like to know if that is a viable option.

I did look up some info on the slingbox. The slingbox wouldn't solve this delima HOWEVER the SlingCatcher would work. Slingbox takes content from your TV (or DVR) and lets you access it via the computer. The SlingCatcher works in reverse - suppose to take your pc content and put it on a TV. Now I have no idea how it works, I don't know anyone personally that has one or that has used one. But according to the specs - it does offer HDMI as an output source. I think the boxes are in the $200 price range however. Anyone know or have used the SlingCatcher?

hogwash... many notebooks with HDMI out can output both digital video and digital audio. further, my antiquated desktop can passthrough digital audio via toslink and there's no conversion in the sound mixer (unless I don't do passthrough and it's resampled at 48khz because it's a cheap onboard soundcard limitation).

even if it is later proven that the mini display ports on the new macs can't output audio (which would be a big bummer), I (and many others) would at least like the ability to pass digital video to HDMI, in lieu of DVI... there aren't too many HDTVs with DVI.

btw, I relate totally to you mjoundi. mini displayport was an idiotic video output choice, but for some reason idiotic choices such as these are 'cool' and 'exciting' in the apple world. I say pay the freakin' royalty for HDMI and add the Apple 200% inflation, and get if over with. mini DP is destined to go the way of firewire.
