Mini DisplayPort to HDMI

Are they going to make this adapter? I know some TVs coming out do not have VGA or DVI, only HDMI now, so is apple going to make this adapter or will we need to buy the displayport adapter to DVI and then a DVI to HDMI adapter as well?

I concur, I am frustrated with Apple for including the mini-display port in the new uni-body macbooks in the first place. HDMI can do everything that MDP can do and it is a much more common standard (it is also quite common in PC laptops). Why force another useless cable format on loyal Mac users. I feel that I am not alone in this as several other forums and tech sites have expressed similar feelings. Now they are really letting us down by not releasing an adapter in a timely manner.

Got my first MacBook, and already starting to feel a bit of frustration. Before including the new MacBook Apple should have made a Mini Displayport - HDMI cable available. I'm not against the new standard, but it doesn't make sense that i have to buy:
Mini Displayport - DVI cable
DVI - HDMI cable
Audio cable

When all of these could have been replaced by a single Mini Displayport - HDMI cable.

And how hard can it be developing such a cable?

"HDMI can do everything that MDP can do"

not true. look it up. for once, HDMI is a proprietary plug while displayport is an open standard by the VESA group. this alon would be a good reason not to want HDMI, because this typically means that cables cost more. now, as long as apple is the only company with mini-displayport in use, we know that the cables will also be expensive. still, potentially, a (e.g.) belkin displayport cable is cheaper than an HDMI-cable.

additionally, DP is capable of higher data rates. specifically, the most recent specification of HDMI (1.3) maxes out at 2560x1600, while (at the moment) DP 1.0 can go up to 3072×1920.

so, it's not true. HDMI cannot do the same as DP. that said, that mini-DP port on the MB(P)s is a pain in the ***. i hope that this changes.

i feel like crying, i just bought a macbook and find out i cant connect it to my HD TV. im contemplating giving it back as its not been 2 weeks yet and buy a sony vaio.... i feel this is soo stupid that they are not even letting people know once and for all if they will have a HDMI or not, and espectially if it includes sound....
problem is that its sooo hard to believe that the macbook isnt capable of it. if i know they will bring one which will work woth digital sound then i will just keep this machine but this dispence is suicide.

From what I have read and from other posts in various forums - the mini display is ONLY capable of video. So regardless if they get a Mini to HDMI - it will only be the video. You will have to run the audio out of the headphone jack.

My setup is mini to dvi - dvi to hdmi - into the TV.
Audio is a typical RCA jack out to the stereo.

I wouldn't be holding your breath that they will have an "all-in-one" cable for both video and audio.
Your best bet is to get what I have seen which is basically a box that you can plug in various video and audio feeds into and then all the outputs are HDMI.

The other alternative is to buy a slingcatcher (not a slingbox) (google slingcatcher). It basically works off wi-fi and it syncs with whatever pc or mac you have and plays it to the TV. Only downside - its pricey.

I can't afford it myself right now so I run the cables which work OK - but maybe santa will be good to me this coming year and get me the slingcatchter!
