Mini DisplayPort to HDMI

Are they going to make this adapter? I know some TVs coming out do not have VGA or DVI, only HDMI now, so is apple going to make this adapter or will we need to buy the displayport adapter to DVI and then a DVI to HDMI adapter as well?

I have been waiting for the new Mac mini, it has the potential to be the perfect computer to integrate into my audio/video system. iTunes audio and video, browsing, youtube, and even the silverlight plugin for Netflix streaming.

I had thought that no audio support in DisplayPort (like no audio support in DVI) was not that huge an issue except that I have discovered an idiosyncrasy with my Sony A/V receiver (which I use to switch all audio and video inputs to a single HDMI output to my Sony Bravia LCD). When the video input supplied is HDMI, the receiver assumes that the audio supplied is over HDMI and will not accept alternate audio inputs like Toslink.

So ... no audio support on DisplayPort is a showstopper for me, I can't use the mini for the application I intended without it.

Apple - the mini will be a killer home A/V machine if, and only if, both audio and video are supplied on DisplayPort and convertable to HDMI. I very much hope that the theories suppied here that it does not turn out to be wrong.

looks like this adapter is available now:

http://www.hdtvsupply.com/mini-display-port-to-hdmi-converter.html

The link seems to say that the adapter carries audio but that 'unibody MacBooks' don't supply it, but the explanation is confusing.

Anyone have a new mini that wants to blow $29.95 to give it a try? I'd do it but I'm not going to buy the mini until I know if audio is passed.

According to the 'knowledge base' section of the MD > HDMI adapter page on monoprice.com:

"Question: Will this adapter support Audio?
Answer: The adapter itself does support transfer of audio from the DisplayPort connector to HDMI. However, some devices like the Apple MacBook, *will not support audio* over it's DP output port."

😟 No love for mini-Display... BOOOO!

As for the guy above me asking about the new Mac Mini's, it sounds like (and don't quote me on this, but) the new Mini's will have a mini-DVI port instead of the mini-Display port. Either way, audio appears to be absent.

Hopefully I'm wrong.. but the evidence is stacking up against audio.

Well, yesterday Apple released a firmware update for the Mini DisplayPort to VGA converter which now finally allows me to use my recently purchased 46" Samsung LCD TV as a monitor! I do have to use a TOS cable in addition for the sound, which is OK by me since both the quality of the picture and sound are fantastic and I can watch movies, view photos, etc on the big screen via Front Row. Unfortunately, several times my MBP has frozen completely after a short time when connected in this way and needs to be restarted by holding the power button for 5 seconds. Does anyone have any ideas why this would happen, or have a similar situation?

My Sony Receiver requires that any input with HDMI video use HDMI audio as well, toslink audio in disabled when HDMI video signal is present. The combination of Apple and Sony behaviors is very frustrating.

I got a:

to merge the mac mini toslink audio into HDMI before the receiver and it works great. A very nice little box if you can choke down the $200. I assign $100 of blame to Sony and $100 of blame to Apple.

I am psyched, new Mac mini makes an awesome media player.

I don't really see how Sony is to blame for any of this. HDMI supports audio and it's unheard of for an HDMI port not to pass audio. Apple decided to give HDMI, a rapidly adapting universal audio/video interface the cold shoulder in favor of Mini DisplayPorts; another audio/video interface nearly (but not quite) as powerful and no where near as universally used. But this really shouldn't be so bad seeing both pass HD video and audio (however HDMI supports HD lossless multi-channel audio codecs, while Mini DP does not) so you could assume a simple adapter would fix everything. But this is where the discrepancy lays. Apple stripped audio out of an audio/video interface they're heavily pushing. So this is definitely Apples fault alone. Now, the real question is why?

It is obvious that Apple is not releasing this cord so all MBP users will go buy an AppleTV!!!!

I'm 2 weeks into the Apple world. I like the computer so far......but I would rather not have to buy a $220 Apple tv on top of a $2200 MBP and then pay $4.99 to rent movie on itunes!!! At least take out the AppleTV equation out!!!!!! Isn't the MBP suppose to be mobile???? What if I want to plug into another tv while I'm mobile, I don't want to have to bring AppleTV everywhere!!!!! It's a mobile laptop, so give me one mini display port to HDMI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LAME!

I'm guessing it is just a way for the to differentiate the AppleTV from the MacMini. And it makes it that much harder to call the MacMini a stereo appliance. There is obviously a reason AppleTV does not allow web-based TV shows... probably the same reason they are making a device that does allow them, that much harder to connect to your TV. Read: I wouldn't expect a software update enabling sound via the Display Port. iTunes TV show sales.

Amusingly, when I told Apple Tech Support that they should have noted on product page that Display Port would not pass sound, their response was, "We want to focus on things the product does do, not things it doesn't do." LOL. I said, the product has a sound port, should I expect sound through that?... and I'd like to confirm the video port has video. Does the USB port support USB? LOL. I think there is a fair basic assumption that a port present on a device should fully support that port unless otherwise noted. But, it would seem, Apple does not agree.
