Shuffle - Not Detected ?

I've had the same problem with my PowerBook G4. Once in a while if I manually add a file, it will suddenly 'see' the iShuffle and do its thing. It rare for it to work with my PowerBook G4 (which synchs with my normal iPod everytime).
However, when I plug the iShuffle into my G5 desktop, it works beautifully....dunno what the difference is.

I am having the same problem with my shuffle. No matter what I do, all of a sudden I just cant get it to mount:(
I've tried it on two macs and a pc and it wont work on any of them...

Does anyone have any ideas?
Or should I just take the thing back to the store?

Yes, we'd all like some help, apparently. I have a 700 mhz ibook and my shuffle worked beautifully when I first installed the updater software on Jaguar.

Now, I just updated to Panther last week and suddenly it won't mount. Does anyone have any idea what that's about? I tried re-installing the updater software which came with the Shuffle, but to no avail.

I just updated to 10.3.9 from 10.3.8 and now my iPs is not recognized by iTunes. At least it shows up in System Profiler as a USB device. The status light on iPs is blinking orange. The iPod Updater (03-23) doesn't recognize iPs either. The Updater either freezes or quits unexpectedly.

When I try to start iTunes it freezes. Tried force quiting iTunes but no go, can't restart iMac because the Finder is frozen too. I ended up doing a system reset to get the computer to respond.

I hope Apple releases an improved iPod Updater or iTunes to resolve the very common My iPod Shuffle isn't recognized problem when Tiger is released..

I used my one free complimentary call to Apple support and the guy didn't hesitate to tell me to send it in. I'd call (800) 275-2273.

Exact same thing happened with me from 10.3.7 to 10.3.8 with my USB 2.0 card in my G4 MDD. I'm downloading 10.3.9 now to see if the problem is fixed there, but from the sounds of it, I'm not going to be too impressed.

I too am hoping all of these issues are resolved with Tiger :-/

I also upgraded to 10.3.9 (and the 3-26-05 iPod updater software, which you can get on the Shuffle website) but it didn't help at all.

Does anyone know if Apple has officially acknowledged this problem?

Same problem here too, with it not being detected by my iBook and iTunes. Just upgraded to Panther 10.3.9 too. Hopefully an easy solution will be availble soon (versus sending it in for repair).

Same symtoms after update. I know it's not the Ipod or extension cable as both work on other systems. I also get the following log entry:

I am also having problems connecting my two iPod shuffles to my G4 Powerbook (Titanium, 667 MHz). Got the iPs three days ago, both worked fine the first time I connected them. I loaded them with music and charged 'em up. A day later I reconnected one of them and again it worked fine. BUT the next day, I upgraded from OS 10.3.8 to 10.3.9, now neither iPod shuffle is recognized by the Powerbook. I plug it in, and I get a green light for about a second. Then it goes out, a second later it flashes green for a split second, then starts blinking orange constantly. The computer does not recognize that anything has been plugged in. iPs works fine when not connected to the computer.

I find it curious that Apple is telling people to send back their iPs when they encounter this problem. Since both of my iPs stopped being recognized by the Powerbook at the same time, after a software upgrade, I seriously doubt the problem is a defective iPs. Sounds like a software/firmware error to me.

Reinstalling iTunes & iPod Updater did not help me.

Any help?

Just to follow up--I got my new Shuffle in last week and it works fine with 10.3.9. No problems whatsoever. And it's all paid for by Apple so who cares. They send you a new one (or refurbished one, although mine looked brand new) and you send them back your dud. What's not to like?

I was able to get my iPod shuffle working with my Ti Powerbook again (see my post above). Here's how it worked for me:

First, I repaired disk permissions. This didn't fix it.
Second, I used OnyX's Maintenance and Cleaning functions. This didn't fix it either.
Third, I shut down the computer, unplugged the power cord and all peripherals, took out the computer battery, and let it sit for 15 minutes. When I restarted it, iPod shuffle mounted just like it should.

I don't know if it was just the third step, or some combination of the steps, but now it works! Hopefully this might help others as well.

I too just can't get my computer to recognize my ipod shuffle. The itunes download just doesn't seem to be working. If you notice, the install file doesn't have any "bytes" and doesn't install. I really don't know what to do. I'm running out of gas!!! If I can't get this thing to work tonight, I have no other option but to return it. Jesse

I got a brand new Mac Mini and Shuffle 2 days ago. The shuffle worked fine at first then suddenly overnight...
I looked at the USB connections via the "About this Mac" options and it gives:
STMP3500
Vendor Name: Sigmatel Inc
Produce ID 13568 ($3500)
I'm based in the UK; is there a UK Apple Support number I phone, or a UK one?

Restart your Mac holding down on Command-Option-[P]-[R] keys.
Worked for me on my G-4 Sawtooth running 10.3.7.
Had no detect prob. with my G-4 ibook running 10.3.6.
