I just finished chatting with Apple Support. I had the same problem, but it is fixed now. Here are the steps we took:

1. Launched Applications/Utilities/System Profiler and found the ipod under one of the USB hubs
2. Launched Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
3. Selected the ipod in list of disks - in my case it was "992.4 MB Apple iPod Media"
4. Selected the partition tab
5. Set the Volume Scheme to 1 partition
6. Set the Format to MS-DOS File System
7. Clicked partition - when it finished, iTunes started up and asked to setup the ipod. Clicked cancel.
8. Ran Applications/Utilities/iPod Software updater/iPod Updater 2005-03-23
9. Chose to restore - when it finished, iTunes started up again. This time I was able to set up and all was back to normal.

For some reason the iPod's flash drive was unable to read the partition tables. It had no drive volume and was unusable. Hopefully this will also work for some of you.

wow, a long thread...

I was having all the same problems as listed above, including that my pbook would recognize the shuffle every time, no problems whatsoever, and my imac was always undependable. this certainly makes me think it's my imac, not the shuffle, as many people are suggesting.

in any case, i used to have my ipod prefs set to NOT enable disk use, i switched it to just 8 MB Data and now the iPS is working as it should. i don't know if this is going to work for everyone, or even if it's going to keep working!! - but it is for now.

cheers!

I'm having a similar problem. At first the 1Gb shuffle just stopped on me. I though the battery might be discharged so I plugged it in to recharge. I noticed that my PBook no longer saw the shuffle but the battery charging light was on. I tried it in my PC and it saw the shuffle as a removable drive but would not recognize it through iTunes. I took it back to the Apple Store in Oak Brook Illinois. They couldn't get it to work either. They filled out the paper work for a warranty replacement and said it would be a week or two suggesting that I would get faster service on line. Its 5 weeks later and so far calls to the store are useless. They don't respond to email inquiries. At first it would at least recharge. Now it is completely dead.

I finally got tired of waiting and went to service on line. I'm filling out the form and it is telling me it is out of warranty which is complete garbage. It has a year warranty and the product hasn't even been out that long. I went through their hoops two days ago and the status still reads customer action pending. This is the second suffle that has died on me. The first only lasted 10 days. I love the device when it is working but I think they have a bad design. I don't think the device is sealed properly.

In any case after being a long time Apple customer I don't appreciate this kind of treatment. I was just about to buy another iBook and now I am rethinking that decision.

Yeah, I have to say that after being one of the "lucky ones" to buy an ill-fated iBook (two free repairs to date, but they wiped my hard drive without telling me the second time) and now an ill-fated Shuffle, my patience is wearing a little thin for my beloved Apple products.

But then again, what else is there? Linux? I bought a Mac because I didn't want to be a computer geek, or learn code. Windows? Crikey, save me.

Its been months now since I first posted my troubles! And it still occurs , i am really tired of worrying "is it going to detect this time". I have read a number of the responses to my orginal message, and i thank you all for your feedback. As for the "Restore your factory default" solution .. i feel its totally bogus .. because if my Mac won't reconize the IPS , why would the ipod updater ... of course .. it hangs there and ask me to Insert the IPS .. which is already plugged into my system.

I truly give up ... this is a waste of time. The amount of time I have spent ... trying to get this Shuffle to mount. Not to mention i have the same problem on my PC at time ...

Just to give u guys a little update. I contacted Apple this morning about the detecting issue i have with my Ipod, they directed me to "depot.info.apple.com" and there i was to fill out my Serial # and my personal information. They are going to send me a replacement shuffle. They did however make it very clear that if i did not return my original defective Shuffle within 10 days, they would charge me $159 !!!

I will keep everyone posted once it arrives.
