As a follow up. I took my shuffle back to the store and upon the recommendation of the sales rep took another one home. I still can't get the ipod shuffle to work. So, the second one is going back too. I'm very disappointed in Apple for creating such a dyfunctional device. I'll be retracting my shuffle recommendation to my bike club about this product. Apple, if you're listening....please fix your product before unleasing it to the general public. Jesse

This is my first foray into Apple products and I am not happy. I have:

Upgraded my Mac Mini from OsX 10.3.7 to 10.3.9
Deleted, then reinstalled iTunes 4.7.1
Installed the iPod Updater
Re-started, the repaired the permissions

And still an unrecognisable IPS (with a USB extension cable).
But, if I connect the iPod, and then open the updater the IPS is recognised and flashes orange. The IPS is stated as being in Recovery Mode. Then, when I try to restore the IPS it freezes on me, I can't even force quit it.

Aaargh! I'm going to phone today and send it back for a refund hopefully.

TRY THIS......

DOES YOIR IPS NOT MOUNT? AT ALL?

GO TO APPLE.COM AND DOWNLOAD IPOD UPDATER SOFTWARE.
1. INSTALL SOFTWARE
2. REBOOT
3. PLUG IN YOUR IPOD SHUFFLE
IT WILL NOT MOUNT ON DESKTOP BUT LEAVE IT IN
4. GO TO "APPLICATIONS FOLDER" TO "UTILITIES" TO IPOD UPDATER
CLICK ON THAT AND THE OPTION OF RESETTING IT TO FACTORY SETTINGS WILL APPEAR. ONCE YOU RESET IT, YOU CAN UNPLUG IT AND REPLUG IT INTO WHERE EVER YOU PLEASE, IT WILL PICK IT UP.... GOOD LUCK

I too ended up having the shuffle replaced—no problem! great phone support!

I found this all interesting because I have three shuffles, two work on both my windoze box and mac, but the one I’m sending back ONLY works on the windows machine and generates the USB driver error I mentioned earlier on the mac. My conclusion is that this shuffle’s interface must be on the edge of the USB specification and that the mac driver just won’t work with it but the windows one will. That the shuffle stopped working on the Mac when I upgraded to 10.3.9 could just be a coincidence or it could be due to a change in the IOUSBFamily drivers (I guess I’ll never know.). So I still don’t know for certain if this is something that could be “fixed” via a driver patch or not. Sorry this won’t help anyone solve their problem.

I'm also having trouble with my ipod shuffle 1GB not mounting. Somtimes it does, though.
The first time I tried to put it in my keybord used for my "Quicksliver" G4 (USB 1 and not sufficient for charging the iPod, I know) and it worked fine.

If I eject it and try to put it back in again it wont mount.
A way that works for me is removing the iPod from the keyboard, put computer to sleep, wake it and put the iPod in. When I do this it mounts fine.

I'm running 10.4 "Tiger" on my G4 now.

I also had problems today connecting the iPod to a Power Mac G5 with 10.3.9.
It didnt mount when I inserted it in the front USB port. Removeing it and putting it back in again solved this.

Apple, is it supposed to be like this?
