New MacBook connected to external VGA display screen flash.

Just got the 2.4Ghz yesterday. For home use I've got it connected to a Samsung SyncMaster 2032NW display via the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. Occasionally the display will go dark for a half-a-second or so and then come back on. It happens randomly, not for hours sometimes and sometimes multiple times over a shorter period of time. There does not seem to be any repeatable action that causes it to happen, it appears to be completely random. This does not happen when I'm using the built-in screen. And I didn't have any problems using the Samsung display with my older MacBook.

Should I take the computer back? Is there something I can do to check the hardware for issues?

I have a MacBook 2.4 connected to a LCD TV by VGA cable, and has had the flashing problems since day 1. (With my TV it's a little more than flashing, since it turns itself off for about 10 secs each time...)

I noticed that switching from 1280x720 to 1280x768 completely made the problem disappear. I did this more than a month ago and it has never flashed since. I have switched back to 1280x720 a couple of times to see if the problem still persisted through the various firmware and software updates, which it did.

So, for me the simple workaround is to go with a slightly incorrect aspect ratio until they fix it.

Based on some suggestions for using SwitchResX, I have been giving it a try, to no avail. Still I have no picute what so ever on my external display although it is shown in the system profiler.
But by doing so I noticed one thing in the system profiler that I didn't notice before..... I Have NO idea if it is of any importance.

This is the info provided with NO Syncmaster 2032MW connected:
Color LCD:
Resolution: 1280 x 800
Depth: 32-bit Color
Core Image: Hardware Accelerated
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: Off
Online: Yes
Quartz Extreme: Supported
Built-In: Yes
Display Connector:
Status: No display connected

And this is the info provided with the Synmaster attached to the VGA-adapter:
Color LCD:
Resolution: 1280 x 800
Depth: 32-bit Color
Core Image: Hardware Accelerated
Mirror: On
Mirror Status: Hardware Mirror
Online: Yes
Quartz Extreme: *Not Supported*
Built-In: Yes
SyncMaster:
Resolution: 1680 x 1050 @ 60 Hz
Depth: 32-bit Color
Core Image: Hardware Accelerated
Main Display: Yes
Mirror: On
Mirror Status: Master Mirror
Online: Yes
Quartz Extreme: Supported
Rotation: Supported
Connection Type: Analog VGA or Analog over DVI-I

The difference is that when the Syncmaster is connected, it says that the internal display does NOT support Quartz Extreme...???

Any ideas?

Hi!

I just got my Mac three days ago, with both the mini-displayport->VGA and *->DVI dongles.

It's normally connected to a Dell 2407wfp through the *->DVI dongle, which works perfectly. No glitches, no flashes and no dancing pixels.

However, I bought the *->VGA dongle to connect it to my projector (Epson TW700), and that's been problematic, to say the least.

I get the sporadic changing of resolution (I think that's what it is, as the projector goes blue), then sleep, then back up again. About 3 seconds in all, at erratic intervals.

My second problem is getting the OS to offer me a 720p resolution in the display options (I can only get 1280x768). Is there any way I can fix this?

Aside from this bug, that I only now realized was so widespread, it's working out well.
