New MacBook connected to external VGA display screen flash.

Just got the 2.4Ghz yesterday. For home use I've got it connected to a Samsung SyncMaster 2032NW display via the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. Occasionally the display will go dark for a half-a-second or so and then come back on. It happens randomly, not for hours sometimes and sometimes multiple times over a shorter period of time. There does not seem to be any repeatable action that causes it to happen, it appears to be completely random. This does not happen when I'm using the built-in screen. And I didn't have any problems using the Samsung display with my older MacBook.

Should I take the computer back? Is there something I can do to check the hardware for issues?

If any of this has already been mentioned, my apologies.

Has anyone read this page yet?

http://getsatisfaction.com/apple/topics/macbookexternal_monitor_locked_in_unusable_flicker_after_monitorsleep

To summarize:
It claims the issue is caused by the macbook going to sleep. Once it wakes up the external monitor begins it's flickering issue. It can be resolved for the time being by unplugging and plugging back in the external monitor to the macbook.

Also, they claim a shortcut of CTRL SHIFTEJECT can be used to reset the monitor and thus avoid the unplug/plug action.

It can also be avoided entirely (supposedly) by disabling sleep for the display as someone may have already mentioned in this topic.

Possible solution?

I installed SwitchResX to see if I could try some "unsupported" refresh rates. After installing, I am still using the 1680x1050 60Hz setting, but I have not had any screen flashes for two days. I have never gone this long without the annoying flashes before.

I noticed now that there are two entries on my "Displays" preferences for 1680x1050. They appear to be identical, but as I said before, my flashing appears to have disappeared!

same problem with a samsung t220 (22 inches) at 1680 x 1050
With a lower resolution, no problem. With other monitors, no problem.
mine is 846.
After knowing that in lower resolution it works well, it's obvious that the auto source scan of the monitor cannot be the reason of the problem. It makes sense the idea of the power administrator of the nvidia card...

VGA Adapter doesn't work with my Samsung 37" LCD. LN37A450

Called Apple. They sent a replacement adapter still doesn't work. Samsung LCD doesn't recognize that the MacBook is even connected. Tried the MacBook with a friend's Vizio and had absolutely no problems.

No idea what the problem is. Possibly a Samsung issue. Either way this is ridiculous.

I have a 13.3 MacBook. Everything works fine at the office running an external Samsung 244T using the DVI link as the only screen. A different Samsung 244T monitor will not work in this mode using a DVI Link at home. Instead I have to use a Samsung 226W using the analog connector (nothing with the DVI connector), and am getting the random flashing off everyone is reporting (Although this never seems to happen with the screensaver going for hours, I noticed). I am now in he process of swapping out cables and connectors, since on the face of it, the outboard parts of my home and office set up should be the same. And, yes, this used to work fine with my black plastic macbook. What gives: Can't we get a response on this??

Two questions:
1. Has anyone successfully connected a 2.4 GHz MacBook to an external monitor using either DVI or VGA at a resolution HIGHER than 1280 X 800, preferably 1920 X 1200.

2. Are people also having problems with the connection of their 2.4 GHz MacBook with an Apple Cinema display at these higher resolutions?

I appreciate your help. This is very frustrating indeed.

Same, same here. Purchased new MacBook yesterday with VGA plug....will not work at all with two different LCD TVs which work fine with my 18 month old MacBook Pro which is, BTW, in the shop for 5+ weeks supposedly getting its NVidia chip replaced!

This puppy goes back tomorrow for a full refund, I have no patience for going through what people in this thread have gone through.

Have always bought Apple because it JUST WORKS. That doesn't appear to be the case anymore. If I wanted this sort of grief, I would have bought a Vista machine....
