New MacBook connected to external VGA display screen flash.

Just got the 2.4Ghz yesterday. For home use I've got it connected to a Samsung SyncMaster 2032NW display via the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. Occasionally the display will go dark for a half-a-second or so and then come back on. It happens randomly, not for hours sometimes and sometimes multiple times over a shorter period of time. There does not seem to be any repeatable action that causes it to happen, it appears to be completely random. This does not happen when I'm using the built-in screen. And I didn't have any problems using the Samsung display with my older MacBook.

Should I take the computer back? Is there something I can do to check the hardware for issues?

I got the new macBook and was hoping to use it with my Samsung HDTV/Monitor that worked great with the macMini via a DVI/VGA adaptor. The mini display port wont work at all with the VGA adaptor (the monitor detects it for a second and then it disappears - no matter what the resolution). Using the DVI adaptor did not have the same problem, but I couldn't get the screen properly aligned in my monitor.
Very surprised to see so many folks having issues with the mini display port / VGA issues. I hope apple fixes this soon.

I just took my MacBook to the store and they swapped it over right away - no problem.

Just got back home and same problem with this one as the last - screen flashes off every now and then.

Has anyone tried loading a different build of leopard onto the machine to sacrifice the new trackpad functions to see if the problem persists - I understand that the build used in the new MacBook is different to the version widely used on all other Macs.

I've heard from someone at Apple they're aware of this issue and a fix of some kind is in the works. I'm hoping this is something that can be resolved with a software update. I have no information on when but I'm hoping the fix is coming soon. The flashing of the screen though really random does seem to find a way of happening at points when it's particularly annoying.

I'm having the same problem with flashing (see my youtube video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-dQIgfIFsI), which I also believe is related to my problem of the Macbook not behaving in clamshell (lid closed) mode. In clamshell mode, the Macbook would power up then go right back to sleep.

At first, I thought it was due to my Crucial 2x2GB chips, as putting back the stock Apple 2x1GB chips seemed to resolve the problem. Returned the RAM and am waiting for replacement. However today, again I had difficulty getting the Macbook into clamshell mode, but it eventually did. Worked for about 1 hr with no problems, UNTIL I fired up iTunes. Then, while in clamshell mode, my external monitor started flashing. This bug really *****, and I hope it's fixable via software, because I'd hate to do the migration thing over again.

Hi. I am having the same issue, but not on a macbook but a 20" iMAC with an external Dell 2208WFP screen hooked up to it via DVI (through miniDVI to DVI cable), running Mac OS X. The Dell screen flashes a lot, especially when new windows are opened or moved on either of the screens. This is really annoying and I haven't found a solution. Do you guys reckon it's the same issue on the iMACs/any idea what I can do to remedy this? I couldn't find any info on this anywhere other than this thread. Thanks!

I have the same problem on my new MacBook. The external display blacks out for half a second or so, repeating at irregular intervals. It occurs on two different monitors, with two different DVI adapters. It occurs both with the main display open and with it closed.

It occurs most often after the display has been blanked due to inactivity, then woken up by mouse activity, but it has also occurred when I've been in the middle of doing things.

I also see lines flickering across the screen in between the flashing - sometimes the lines appear with no flashing and vice versa.

In all cases, I have been able to stop the flashing by unplugging the DVI adapter from the video port and plugging it back in again. Simply turning the monitor off and on, or unplugging the monitor from the adapter does not help.

I'm rather disappointed in this, since the only reason I bought a new MacBook was the fact that my old black one used to freeze 2 or 3 times a day (started just after the warranty expired, of course).

I can't seem to wake my Macbook 2.4 Alu with my USB keyboard/mouse when connected to my screen, it's a Samsung t240HD connected via display port to DVI and a DVI to HDMI cable. Using the remote wakes the computer and everything seems to work fine.

FYI, when I used a dvi to dvi cable I got these random flashes on my screen, most noticeable with dark background graphics. However, going DVI to HDMI seems to have fixed this. I haven't tested VGA.

I've got the exact same problem as rkachel except I'm using a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW. I'm gonna try lowering the resolution like others have mentioned and see if it helps. I'll report back later.

It at least gives me some comfort knowing that other people are having the same problem. Hopefully we get a proper fix soon.
