New MacBook connected to external VGA display screen flash.

Just got the 2.4Ghz yesterday. For home use I've got it connected to a Samsung SyncMaster 2032NW display via the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter. Occasionally the display will go dark for a half-a-second or so and then come back on. It happens randomly, not for hours sometimes and sometimes multiple times over a shorter period of time. There does not seem to be any repeatable action that causes it to happen, it appears to be completely random. This does not happen when I'm using the built-in screen. And I didn't have any problems using the Samsung display with my older MacBook.

Should I take the computer back? Is there something I can do to check the hardware for issues?

As time goes by the "flash" seems to be happening more often, at times multiple times in a minute, then not for a long time (hours). And there are other things bugging me i.e. with my previous MacBook, when it'd go to sleep my external display would sleep as well. Now when my MB sleeps my display says there's a cable problem.

Same problems here - connecting a Samsung 2232BW+ via DVI on a new macbook. (Note that this isn't just a VGA issue, as one poster noted)

I get snow on initial connection for about two seconds, and random flickers to black while working.

The display also sometimes won't wake from low-energy mode, and requires unplugging and re-plugging the adapter to get it to work.

What would be lovely is a response from apple, saying "hey, we hear you, and we're working on it. Expect a fix in x time (ish)."

Apple?

I have a Macbook 2008, 4gb RAM connected to a dell 2505 24" via mini DVI convertor and running native 1920x1200 and I'm getting similar problems as discussed.

1. Laptop seems to be quite hot.
2. Artificats on external monitor appear as random 1px high lines perhaps 50pixels wide. In my experience this represents a graphical glitch caused by excessive heat.
3. Random total blanking of external display. Blanking lasts up to 2 seconds and can happen as much as 3 times per minute.
4. On resume from sleep i can only see a black screen with a mouse cursor that is working accross both laptop monitor and external monitor but no login box anywhere. Ctrl ShftEsc doesn't help.

Snap.

Macbook 2008 connected by Displayport/DVI adapter to 20" Cinema Display. I get:

1 Artificats on external monitor appear as random 1px high lines perhaps 50pixels wide
2. Random total blanking of external display. Blanking lasts up to 2 seconds

Disconnecting and then reconnecting the adapter seems to clear the problem. Let's hope there is a better solution on the way.

Just wanted to put my vote in that I am also experiencing the same issue with a Dell 24" external monitor using VGA.

Here is what's weird though. I used one displayPort to VGA adapter and it would CONSTANTLY flash off and on (obviously not usable), so I tried a friends displayPort to VGA adapter which would work for about 5min then flash for half a second.

I swapped them back and forth many times, interesting that the issue changes on a per-adapter basis (again these were both identical displayPort to VGA adapters, but different results).

Maybe the adapters are the problem?

I haven't been using my MB with my monitor too much just cause this problem is annoying, but the other day I actually had trouble even getting an image to show up. This seems like such a weird and widespread problem that I'm really surprised Apple let it slip through the cracks. I don't see how they could have missed this in testing.

My external monitor (VGA) problems were getting more and more frequent at 1680 x 1050. I lowered resolution to 1440 x 900, and the problem disappeared. I have been running that way for several days without glitches. Every time I switched back to the higher resolution, however, the flicker immediately returned.

Today, I installed the "Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update" (2.3) that was delivered via Software Update. It installed and rebooted, and since then, I have not had any screen problems at 1680 x 1050! Not sure how it could be related, but since installing that update and rebooting, I have had no further screen flash issues! It's been holding steady for a while now. In the past, I would definitely have seen screen outages multiple times in this timeframe.

As always, YMMV.
