New MacBook 2.4 - Erratic Trackpad

The new computer is amazing..... except for the trackpad which is erratic in operation.
Sometimes it registers the clicks, sometimes it doesn't.
Sometimes the cursor moves, some times it doesn't.
Sometimes one puts the cursor over a menu item to select, and when pressing the pad, the cursor jumps off without the item getting selected.
It's erratic about 10 of every 100 click.

Looking online, it seems I am not the only one with this problem.

Does any one know of a software patch to address the problem?

I don't know why the heck people leave their thumb on the pad while using the index finger? Maybe I'm the only one, but I hate having to physically click the trackpad of a laptop for it to register my click, I love it the way the new machines work, means using a tap in order to click.

As for the truly lovable variety of multitouch gestures, certain cutbacks come along with these new features, one of which I think is not being able to use the new trackpad the way you might be used to from an older model (where you practically always needed your thumb for clicks).

Maybe that's the simple answer to the whole issue?
p.s. That would also explain why some users report the issue doesn't come up if you place the thumb below 1/4 of the pad near the bottom, because that area is not reserved for multitouch functioning.

Hi
I posted in another thread about the same thing, I must have missed this one, I apologize.
I am however having similar problems.
My cursor freezes, no matter how much I move my finger across the trackpad it will not move, it seems to happen randomly and does not seem to be related to what type of program I am running.
It will always start moving again if I wait and count to 3 and then put my finger back on, but it will sometimes freeze again immediately afterwards.
I have only minor trouble with clicking, I use tap tup click but sometimes I have to tap it quite a few times, I usually use the click then and it works.
I have changed around the trackpad settings a few times but the frequency of the freezing seems to be the same whichever setting I have.
My trackpad firmware is up to date.
Thanks!

Hello All,

My name is Harris and i am a Apple Store Genius.

Please make sure you have installed the latest version of 10.5.6 by reinstalling it using the combo update on apple.com/downloads.

Also reset your PRAM and SMC.

Then make sure you have downloaded the SMC Update, the EFI Firmware Update, and the Multitouch Update for MacBooks and MacBook Pros.

Keep in mind that the reason that the index finger does not cause tracking when the thumb is placed in the middle is because that is the common position for beginning a multitouch gesture. If you turn multitouch off, you will see that placing your thumb in the middle and dragging your index finger will move the cursor. That is NORMAL!

Hope this helps,

~ Harris

Add me to the list of people disappointed with the Trackpad. My Macbook is about two weeks old. I have a Boot Camp partition running XP Pro on it.

But first - the issues in OS X. If I reboot from Windows (boot camp) into OS X the track pad works as intended until I actually use a physical click to anchor the cursor - after that, tap to click no longer works. I much "thumb click" the pad to select anything. Same with the right click. Up until I use the physical click, I can right click using two fingers. This function no longer works after I have used the physical click. I then need to use the physical right click. To get the trackpad working as intended, I have to restart from OS X into OS X to somehow "restore" the trackpad. Not useful.

Second - the issues in XP - I have installed the latest driver from Apple for use of the track pad under Windows - but it did not help. Although I can now tap to click and two finger tap to right click with none of the issues of losing this functionality after a physical click to drag, the sensitivity of the pad is erratic and terribly frustrating. The cursor movement will stop as you are pulling it across the screen for a second or two, it will suddenly select a whole bunch of text and move it, it will unexpectedly select and rearrange fields in Outlook just because your moved across that area of the screen. Bottom line - in Windows, the trackpad - even with the new driver - is useless.

I now need to travel with a mouse. Running windows on a MacBook is still very much a primitive exercise.
