Citing my post above from Nov 4, 2008

"According to the Apple technical support employee I just spoke with, this is a known issue for an iPod touch set to manually manage music."

Apple has acknowledged this issue, but has not provided a timeline for a fix.

The official workaround (again from my post above from Nov 7, 2008):

"I was told this was a known issue, and that the fix is to first try to reset all settings (on the iPod via Settings > General > Reset All Settings), and if that does not work do a complete restore of the iPod (in iTunes computer application)."

There is no known fix for this problem other than to perform a complete restore of the iPod. Since this is a destructive move and wipes all song metadata, it is definitely not an acceptable fix.

Apple needs to fix this critical issue.

Reliable music playback is the primary purpose of an iPod.

If you are experiencing this issue, please contact Apple technical support, let them know this is a serious issue, and report their response back on this thread. I plan on asking them once more again the status of this issue when I have some free time later this week.

And yes, I continue to experience this hideous bug every day, every time I listen to my iPod.

I'd followed the advice on here and restored my ipod (took a lot of work getting everything backed up, and then restoring things like album artwork). At first it had fixed the problem, but after less than a week itunes was losing my play counts and last played data again!

This time, though, I've found a way to fix it without having to restore the ipod!
1) I installed winamp, with the 'ml_ipod' plugin.
2) I started winamp with my ipod plugged in (and itunes closed), and after a few minutes winamp parsed the database.
3) I ejected the ipod from winamp.
4) I disconnected, and then reconnected my ipod after listening to a few songs (don't know if this step was necessary), then started itunes, and my new playcount data was appearing again! Including all of the songs I had recently played that itunes had forgotten about!

So basically, opening the ipod in winamp seems to fix the corrupted database (or whatever the problem is). Do this at your own risk obviously, but if all apple can suggest to fix it is to restore the ipod then there isn't really much to lose, imo. It only takes a few minutes.

Hope this helps someone.

Definitely not fixed. I did not have any problems under 2.2.1, now I have syncing issues with 3.0. For some reason, the last song of an album will not be counted as having been played. And when it actually does, the whole album gets counted as 2 plays minus the last track. Quite annoying.

I did a full reset, didn't help, a full restore, still same problem.

That's an odd one, I have 3.0 issues but not that one. Have you tried restoring as a +new iPod+ rather than restoring from your last backup? Perhaps something in the last backup is corrupted, so completely starting from scratch may help.

Still having the issue. But if I play several albums before I sync the iPod Touch to iTunes, only the LAST song played will not be counted as played, everything else will.

I tried deleting my regular iPod Touch playlist and creating a brand new one, still same thing.

I guess I tried all I could, really. I'll report back after we get an update on OS3...
